Any ideas on restoring a PC, that doesn't have a network card? HD was formatted, but nothing put back in its place yet.

What format was the backup that you want to restore done in ?

Or are you restoring an ancient XT ?

Or are you doing a clean install.

USB NIC / USB HDD's / USB link cables
Even XT's could take a parallel port NIC
You could use a laplink cable if you have a boot disk.

Ambersil is very good at restoring the plastics back to original cleanliness.

Don't understand half that to be honest. It was an old desktop running Win98SE. I formatted it after gathering together everything I wanted to keep and burning it to disc. But then after I formatted it it dawned on me that I left all my old email on it. I haven't installed anything back onto it yet.

use win98se boot disk, to boot up pc, then u cud copy all the emails to floppy ,or make knoppix boot cd ,os runs from cdrom doesnt affect hd., ,go to bootdisk.com for 98se files, fits on 1 floppy.WITH knoppix u may be able to transfer files to a usbdrive, if it detects it,properly.if u load an os to c:\ windows ,directory, your emails will still be left on hd,or use the windows directory you originally used.

Ah you are looking for an UNFORMAT utility.

If you have old DOS disks you may have the unformat utility on them, though I'm not sure if it only works on drives up to 2GB.

There are any number to download. Not sure what the best one is though as I haven't had to use much.

The main thing is DON'T INSTALL ANYTHING ON THE DRIVE as you may overwrite the existing data.

The win98 disk ain't gonna be much use on a formatted drive ( they dropped Undelete and Unformat when 95 came out  )

I'm sure the knoppix CD has the utils you need but easier utils out there.

set up the hd as a slave drive d:\, use drive c:\ install win 98se or win xp,u only need 4gig drive c:\ ,then u can browse d:\, u can download undelete utilitys from net, like norton utilitys, if these files are important, install nothing on ,the drive,be gentle when installing,hd.do google search undelete utilitys, win xp, win 98 ,theres dos utilitys avaidable too.that work from dos prompt.
I DONT like knoppix, its hard to use if you never used linux before.set it on cable 2, as secondary, master, might be easier that way.i think theres old norton dos utilitys that will do it.or download trial util programs.
