I have a wireless router at home, a D-Link DI-524 and I am trying to open ports on it for the faster use of torrents.

I followed the instructions which I found on D-Links website but to no joy.

Does anyone have any idea on how to do this??

    Thanks

Go to port Forwarding and enter a User defined one 6881 6881 6881 if its Azureus, apply and make sure its set for the correct IP ie 192.168.1.X

Have you tried just setting the ip range start and end address to the same thing, e.g. 192.168.0.100 (or whatever the ip of the machine is your planning to forward the traffic onto).
