Got mine for E 179 just after Xmas and are still that price at my local branch. That included E 50 (E2 x 25) vouchers also.:)
Not a bad deal considering DID electrical charge E199.

If it is the dvdr 610 steer clear of it. I had 3 of them one after the other all went faulty after a few weeks. Check the web for feedback 99% negative comments on that particular one. It is being heavily discounted by most suppliers at the moment. exchanged mine for a Panasonic finaly which is just great.

Id say its the Philips DVDR 3305 which is meant to be great. If it was e129 it would be a good deal but its listed at 199 online.

Just rang today, the Philips 3305 is €179 with €50 worth of vouchers.

Are those vouchers specifically for rentals, or can you use them against purchases too?

The vouchers are for rentals ONLY and they are limited to your account, if you give them your account number that is. :( Also, they are issued in till roll receipt paper and have a expiry date printed on them. :( (Somewhere in the region of 3 months from date of purchase). :(

Still, no a bad machine. :)

I bought one today, nice machine. The vouchers are a bit misleading, they are actually 25 coupons with €2 off new releases which expire in 2 months, they should really tell you this.

    good price

The Xtravision.ie website now has the Phillips recorder for 149 rrp plus the 50 squid rental vouchers. Called into Palmerstown branch on Sunday and they only had the same machine as specisied on the website for 174.

Ended up buying the Pye DVD recorder in Power city for 99, very nice machine btw.

'tis very nice, have only had it for the one night but compared to my parents' old Phillips or the one they had to replace it with, it's on a par if not better.

It's DVD+R and +RW for recording only and plays back all formats though including DiVX, nice design, not as bulky as some of the others.

Is that only in PowerCity do you know? Which branch? Are they on special or is that now their RRP?

Not sure, I bought mine in Fonthill but generally all Power City's offers are available in all branches. I think they're on "Long term" special but they do have an RRP of about 150 that they're reduced from. Great to hear they're a rebradged Phillips.

DID electrical are selling the Philips DVDR 3305 for €149.99. I bought one and it seems to be a good machine. Records on DVD+R and -R discs and plays all the usual. It's in argos for €200.

    DC.

i bought in bray, there were a few there when i got one, not sure if its a special, but there is original price tag on it for 150euros,,,may be better than the philips one as this one can play all dvd/divX/Xvid/MPG files, but the philips cant play xvid or divX,this will only record on the + discs,,but hey,,whats the difference nowadays??

    Awesome!
Bought it today, plugged it in. The one sheet quick start guide is a breeze and it will record onto -R and -RW (must've had an update) Has Videoplus with PDC so it'll be on the ball for recording. The 2hr recording mode (DVD quality) image is fine (I was recording through an analogue arial)

€149 and you get 25x vouchers for €2 off new game or movie rental (valid for 6 months)
    cracking deal xtravision!

That Philips 3305 one gets some iffy reviews on the web. I was goinf to buy one. Pity. Might try the Pye one now.

Looks like the Pye model is certified by Divx.

Got one of these machines today - looks like an excellent piece of kit. It seems to be a Philips DVDR 3305 clone.

2/MAKE SURE NO DISC IS IN MACHINE SWITCH ON AND WAIT UNTILL DISPLAY SHOWS NO DISC ENTER 0086000 AND PRESS OK SWITCH MACHINE OFF.
3/MAKE SURE NO DISC IS IN MACHINE SWITCH ON AND WAIT UNTILL DISPLAY SHOWS NO DISC ENTER 0009 AND PRESS OK YOU WILL NOW SEE THE REGION CODE HAS CHANGED TO 0 YOU ARE NOW REGION FREE.

    Firmware upgrade:

Did you use this philips firmware on the Pye DVD recorder?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 556 ✭✭✭JimmySmith

    I bought the PYE.
Only problem i have is that if i record the widescreen feed from the Sky box, then play it back on a non widescreen TV or PC the picture plays back as 4:3 on the full screen (e.g people are tall and thin). There seems to be no way to tell the DVD recorder that it is recording widescreen,. Or if there is i havent found it yet.

The PYE unit is now up to €120 on the Powercity website.

Still a good price for the machine imho.

    I'm pleased with mine.
Only major issue at the moment i think is that if you edit a DVD+RW on the machine itself it works on other machines, but you cant make a copy of it again on your PC. No ripping or copying software at all will work. And this is whether you finalized the DVD+RW or not. This seems to be an issue without a solution according to all of the newsgroups i've read.

So if you want to use only DVD+RWs until you find somthing you want to keep forever, you are screwed. You'll just have to keep the DVD+RW which is a waste when you could have copied it onto another DVD+R or -R instead and continued to use your RW for recording over and over.

Thats weird, the philips one allows you to copy to PC using all disc types and formats. They are great machines.

Did you try "DVDShrink" software (freeware) on your PC? That can usually handle any type you throw at it. Or is it the model of DVD drive in the PC that is the problem?

3 different PCs with different makes of DVD burners. I've used every type of software you can think of. Even DVD decrypter wont read the DVDs.
I've found several references to the very problem on DVD ripping groups and its only with phillips dvd recorders this happens with. The error is 'Invalid menu structure'

I think, theres an option in the system menu to set what way you want it to record. I got one last night and I seem to remember seeing that somewhere.

Just posting back to let people know i'm bringing this back to the shop.
Aside from not being able to make copies of recorded dvd+rws on the pc.
Now i'm finding when i record on normal dvd+rs that somtimes it just stops recording.
Other times it says recovering when i stop a recording, and then the DVD+R comes up empty but its trashed and cant be used again.
Sometimes it just stops recording itself after a random amount of time.
I've tried it with several different brands of disc.
All in all a disaster of a dvd-recorder. Steer clear.

Philips 610 = biggest piece of sh!t I've wasted money on. I'm currently in the process of trying to find the receipt off mine to get Philips to replace it.

Steer clear at all costs. No amount of firmware upgrades has sorted the problems on this machine. If you are given one for free and don't mind not being able to watch programs you record on it - go for it. Other wise - no way!!!

My Philips DivX 5100 is ok, but has some annoying glitchs. So far the PYE unit is working ok for me.

I being using this machine now for several weeks and have not found any of these problems. I've used DVD shrink, DVD decrypt and Nero with no issues.
