Is there a rock music club in Dublin??

If there is one, it must be really well hidden.
Im looking for a club (i mean by that with a dancefloor, not like a pub or bar), where rock/indie music will be played some nite... (Not live music, that I know where to find) The Hub used to be allrite but the two last times i went there it was just horrible music and quite empty. The last times i went downstairs in eamon dorans, it was either not rock music or there was almost no one in.
I had heard of Helter Shelter in Vicar St but by the time i decided to try it didnt exist anymore and was replaced by Girls Aloud  and Britney Spears  music.
So is there a place where its possible to dance on rock music in Dublin? Like Barfly in London or Scala where a friend told me she'd been.

Hopefully there will a "yes" answer...

    Cheers! :v:

Rock Jihad is on randomly downstairs in the international. Only about once a month at the minute but it was pretty busy last time I was there so I'd say they'll put it on more often.

lads whelans is what you make it! if you wanna jump around like a sap then do it or if you wanna listen to the tunes you can, i go with about 4-5 mates all into the music and just find a spot chill out and enjoy the vibes

there is hardly any alt/indie stuff
they play a few new tracks mixed in with the same songs by the same bands every time ive been there. I love the smiths but this charming man is not thier only track the same goes for all the other obvious indie bands they play its the exact same songs by these artists. I ahve never heard a song that was different, unusual, chalenging or new to me while there its like a 15 year olds best of indie collection on shuffle.

Whelans has been way overcrowded the last few times I've been in it, but still the best music gets played there. Is the hub any good?

upstairs in doyles and downstairs in thomas reeds are ok
but in general there is nowhere in dublin that plays a decent selection of music Issac Butts on wendsday is suposed to be good but im not longer a college bum to be able to try it out

Reeds has gone to the dogs.

Agree with the whelans set list, this charming man. going underground ,loose fit etc. The sign of a terrible dj or club.

Helter shelter had potential but played too much drivel like the undertones.

Rogue on Dame st plays some good stuff though a bit small while the you can hear some good music in the foggy dew just down the road though both are bars not clubs.

Pravda plays some good stuff now with john form sack djìng some nights while solas on a sunday night s dj is sack frontman martin mccann.

Speaking of the Foggy Dew, what's that weird smell that's always in there? Smells like rotten vegatables.

Haven't been to Rogue, I was under the impression it was more more a dance place

Rogue is small enough with two floors, downstairs been more the dance part.

Some nights at least upstairs is more alternative.

There is a hopping club called Q+A which is on 4 times a year in the Temple Bar music centre.
It's aimed at a gay audience as an alternative to the stereotypical poppy scene but it has a large straight following!
The next one is on Friday April 7th and will tie in with the release of the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album and Morrissey album. There is usually cds, dvds, badges, and the like given away on the night and whacky stuff happening round the club (barbershop quartet, balloon drops, etc...) .. worth a look!

Having been involved with a few indie clubs I just wanted to point out
that most of the time one has to play the more mainstream indie stuff
or the punters don't come back. For example, I had a regular night in
Isaac butt few years back and played a wide selection of stuff. However,
the crowds only came when the rock club started downstairs where they
were guaranteed the usual fare. The odd person enjoying or recognising
a decent tune was really cool though.

Thats probaly the reason their is no good rock clubs
because people dont want new different or chalenging music when thier out they want the same stuff they have heard a thousand times before.

well lets be honest we are a little bit snobby about our music, so when people who aren't as "up" in the scene as most of us we tend to think they just listen to the stuff we've all heard a thousand time before, but lets be right about it we all started somewhere, so hurrah for whelans it is indie and alt but not as indie as alt as our own cd/tape/record collection but its better than some RnB disco club rubbish

well, thanks all for all this, but I think I can definitely say that there is no proper rock club in Dublin then.
I'll try that Q+A in TBMC tho.

funny how easy it is to find dance-"sky music"-pop-chart music-rnb-shake-my-ass- clubs, which seem to be at every corner of the streets in Dublin, compared to alternative, indie or rock club.

i suppose i should turn myself into the typical sheep that just likes whatever she hears on the radio and follows the crowd.

    hmm...yeh rite

I've been to this a couple of times, interesting live bands and a good DJ set afterwards, particularly if you're into art-rock / new wave / post punk sort of stuff. Recommended... Though as far as I know it only happens once a month.

True. They want something they know really well so they can dance to it.

The re-opened Butt's had a Barfly ish night before Christmas with new rock and indie, played all sorts, once a month, but they've stopped it now as the venue is focussing on Dance music.
    :(

the ground floor of 4 Dame Lane can be pretty good for alternative music Thursdays anyway, and Fridays too I think

Thomas Reed's was good 4 or 5 years ago downstairs but actually haven't been there in ages

Whelan's is Whelan's you like it or you don't. I still like it but I hear what you're saying about "This Charming Man".... add to that "There She Goes" by The La's (every night)

though sometimes earlier in the week you get DJ's playing more random alternative stuff

quick question! im currently compiling a set list for an indie/alt night in galway and was wondering if a post rock track (if dancey enough!) would be considered suitable??? also feel free to pm me with any suggestions of alternatives to the usual smiths/franz ferdinand fare!

Well there's an alt-night I'd pay in to.

M83? 65dos? Red Sparrowes? Up C + Down C...? God is an Astronaut (for a bit o' Irish)?

Just some bands with shorter, more upbeat tracks than your standard GYBE/EiTS epics. While I'd gladly listen to 20mins of 'Sleep' in a club, I can't think of many people who would :)

As Pie said, I think it would depend on the track and more importantly what time you play it. I reckon you could play it early no problem before people get much dink into them when they're reluctant to dance.
