Having drank heavily for the last few years( at least 1 bottle of vodka a day, sometimes 2) I decided to quit yesterday....Well no sleep last nite...Had to change my t shirt 3 times, the sweats were so bad...Today I am in an absolute heap...Does this last long ? If I knew tomorrow might be better...I might feel better...I dread bedtime tonight... just dry retching...I have drank 2 litres of water today but my mouth is bone dry again in a few mins...Anyone???

My hat goes off to you, Thats a big step to take, But your aim is to keep active, Try not to think about the drink, Your gonna go through the sweats for about a week or so, If your on a total Detox, It's not really a good idea to Just Stop all drink, I know it sounds wierd but goin from a litre a day to nothin is gonna be tough, Seriously though, You need a hobbie or an activity to keep you rmind of it,

Need any more help or Morale Support, Were all here to help

Get yourself to a professional because I guarantee you will crack quite soon with your current method. You may need to be prescribed something to take the edge off the withdrawal and some counciling.

EDIT - And fairplay for making the first step

My dad is going through the same thing at the moment. He can't sleep at all because every time he closes his eyes he feels like he is floating. He is 'sleeping' on the floor because he his sweats are so bad. He is going to the doctor but he will probably go to AA meetings too.

You will of course feel better! Very quickly too! Soon the symptoms will slow down and stop so don't worry. Keep eating and drinking, take vitamin tablets etc. Your body just has to get used to this as what it has adapted to dealing with so often has just been removed. It's a shock to the system, a good shock. Eat plenty of fruit and as you seem to be doing; keep hydrated.

If you find it too much to take do NOT go back on the booze. Go to your GP. Don't be put off that he may just think it a minor issue. He will not and will likely prescribe you something temporarily to help you through it.

I also take my hat off to you. And commend you on the apparent ease of your resolve. Keep it up.

It's great that you want to quit but you will have to be more careful than you are now. Unlike withdrawing from some other drugs, going through alcohol withdrawal can be fatal. You really should be doing this under medical supervision. I'm not a doctor so I can't tell you how it will affect you but 1 litre a day sounds a lot to me and you really need to careful with cutting it out all at once.

This is the only way I can do it, I wish I had a couple of grand to go to a treatment centre..But hold on I am in Bupa..Essential Plus Plan..Cant focus enough today to look up stuff on the net...Can somebody do it for me..Where could I go..Dont wish to be a pain...But all my effort today is to stop shaking...jesus Its bad !. I will go anywhere and am up to date with Bupa..M

If you have the shakes, perhaps a stop in the pharmacy might be of help, I think going to the doctor tomorrow regardless would be useful, its quite possible he has a list of local links that will be useful.

St. John of God's (Stillorgan?) is often mentioned in connection with alcohol treatment.

please ring your gp now, do you have his number?
do you have any friends that can help that know the situation?
    hang on in there man.
I'll have a look for what I can.

ok john of gods dont do it with bupa
I just got off the phone to them.
St. Patricks has a good treatment centre she said and they do BUPA, but you will need a GP referral anyway she said, unless you go to your nearest casualty.
Sorry I cant help anymore, PM me if you want any further help.

In case anyone is concerned, I spoke to the OP on the phone and he is on his way to his local casualty.

    Thanks Blub2k4,

I was going to suggest he do that but I'm glad to hear he doesn't need that advice. The DT's can be bad but with medical help he should get through it. If you're speaking to him again tell him we wish him the best.

Hopefully the OP is now in St Pats, since 10:30 and will get on with rebuilding and living his life after the very brave steps he took so far.

I believe in karma and dont ever want to be in that dark addiction hole myself again, here's hoping the OP gets out of his.

New leaf I am glad you have sought help and will be getting treatment.
Congratuations on being so brave and valuing you life and liver and soberity over drinking.

I would suggest that maybe you use the free blog ( which you can link to from under your name ) to chronical your journey rather then here.
I am sure you will get people reading it and offering support.

Good luck to you in the task of reshaping your life.

    that's a fantastic idea
not only will it help you to write out a daily journal but in times to come it may also be good to be able to look back and see how far you've come.

it's threads like this that make me happy to be part of PI

I am really scared, but glad too,if that makes sense

it makes total sense, you've lifted a weight off your sholders and going through a process that can be scarey, stay strong

    Just saw this thread.
To the OP, great that you got into Pat's. I was going to suggest most of what others mentioned, and from the sounds of it you might well benefit from getting to AA meetings, but that will all be covered in Pat's. Feel free to ask on here if unsure about anything.

I was where you are over 15 years ago and haven't had to take a drink since. You can get through it- I wish you well.

Well done to Blub2k4, you really helped this guy when he needed it most.

and Blub2k4, well, i didn't realised there were still people like you out there!

Good man. You'll have to wait 48 hours before you completely detox, and you probably won't sleep too well during that period.

After, you'll sleep like a baby.

Eat healty for the next week if you can, get lots of greens in and go to your chemist for a Vitamin B pills (B6 and B12) to stop you from feeling too 'nervy'.

Well today was hard...Some hard honest questions needed to be answered...Back in my room..Still have a signal on the laptop, maybe I will start a blog. Not sure how to do it if I post under this name.. help needed, in laymans terms. I do have a regular sign in name but dont really want to use it. There is 23 in the group and surprise surprise I am the oldest...I am 43 ! This alcoholism is rampant especially amongst the 20 somethings. When I know how to create a blog I will shift this post from here to there....Thank you all so much...M

New Leaf, I'm glad to hear everything is going better at the moment, it wont be easy but then I think you did a lot of the hard physical stuff already and just need to move on to the mental stuff which will possibly be harder and more painful than the sweats and shakes were.
I'm trying to organise something on the blogging front with Beruthiels help, so I'll let you know under your regged name or we can post details here, watch this space.

    Good luck. :D
