I had an advantage because I did this sort of thing in college psychology. If I remember correctly, in a real smile the eyes crease more, the cheeks raise up towards the eyes faster and the smile lasts longer. Fake smiles are often brief and seem very laboured.

Thats where i read about it too, some pretty useful stuff in that book. Ask someone what a question (what cards do you have) and watch their throat, if they swallow they're probably lying.

Fake smiles are mostly about the eyes and somewhat about the length of time the facial expression goes on for. The best body language indication that a person is lyng is what is called a microexpression. We all know that liars (and bluffers) restrict their body language so that their body won't "give them away". When someone is lying they will often attempt to give facial expressions that are congruent with what htey are saying but because they are lying they will restrict the expression to a very quick one, hence the term microexpression. It's the best way to tell when a person is lying, though not so helpful ata poker table if someone isn't talking (tip: don't talk when you've moved in against good players). Another cool way of knowing what's in someone's head is that different parts of your brain are responsible for different things and your eye movement reflects this. If I asked you to think of either your favourite peice of music, a friend from your past, or a time when you were in pain I could tell which you were thinking of by where your eyes looked. As you are looking at them it goes - remembering an image (friend) up and to right; remembering music middle right; rememebring a feeling (pain) down and to left. Try it out on someone.

eyes are a big give away, some of them really scrunched aorund this area showing a true smile while others remained nearly motionless and were fake.

stupid 14. thought i was going good aswell. I think there strange looking faces put me off.

I got a meagre 11 but I was playing a sit and go at the same time and missed 3 or 4 of them. I found it easier as it went along, for me the biggest tell was how fast the face returned to looking normal. In the fake ones it tended to happen straight away, as if the smile was just turned off, but in the real ones it was a bit more gradual.
