just got a brochuse from www.warehouseexpress.com and they are advertising a Sigma 20-40mm F2.8 EX DG Aspherical lens for 248.99 sterling, reduced from 649.99 sterling.
I don't work for them or anything, just thought that someone may be interested at that price

They have it for digital Canon and Pentax as well .... great deal, if only I had £250 :(

They also have the Sigma 100-300mm F4 EX IF for Canon and Nikon for £550, which is over £500 off ... if only I had £550 :(

That is quite a narrow and not hugely useful focal length range for
a dSLR which has the 1.3 crop ratio. It is not particular wide or
    long at either end.

The 50mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2 primes are much better glass
and I'd personally buy both for not too much more than that
zoom from Sigma. I've had mixed quality experiences with Sigma
    lenses I've ever owned.

I wasn't making a recommendation for the lens, just passing on the info...it does seem to be a strange length alright, not wide enough to be be wide and not enough to be useful as a zoom...
I would agree with the 50mm f/1.8 though, lovely lens

Surely you buy a Canon body to allow you to use Canon lenses or a Nikon to use Nikkor lenses ?

what's your point? there are a lot of companies who make Canon/Nikon/Minolta etc. compatible lenses...just coz you have a Canon doesn't mean you are stuck with using Canon manufactured lenses

Third party lense companies such as Sigma or Tramon make ranges of lense with different mounts. So while you have to buy the Sigma lense for a Canon mount (eg the EF mount or EF-S mount), you can probably get the same lens model for each different major camera mount.
