Allen Carrs Easy Way to Stop Watching Lost

Last nights episode (2.01) was great but I think I would have preferred if RTE waited another month or two and started showing double episodes like last series. I don't know if I could stick 22/26 cliffhangers with a week in between with the almost guaranteed certainty that it won't all be explained at the end of it all.

People watch Lost 'cos they want an explanation - but the makers can't give it 'cos people will stop watching. So all they can do to keep you watching is add more questions, which in turn need even more explaining. It's really very similiar to what Allen Carr says about smoking - once you smoke one cigarette you want another one to placate your craving, but the act of smoking that second one causes a nicotin spike and another craving etc. etc. And so it is with Lost, just replace "cigarette" with "explanation" and "craving" with "question".

Chances are they'll just keep putting in more questions to keep it going until everybody stops watching anyway, I mean has JJ Abrams said how long they are going to keep this up for? Look at the Sopranos - that was originally written as 4 series and now what are they up to 6,7?

    Isn't life too short?

They said it would be 4 or 5 series I think. Although at the rate its going now, I dunno if thats true. Still I wish it was 2 or 3 series of just pwnage tv rather than just long drawn out tripe.

Are you guys the kind of people who read the last page of a book just to find out what happens? The mystery is a huge part of the appeal and fun of Lost! IMO anyway

I like having to tune in to find out the answers to questions, but occasionally I forget something that was asked several episodes back. Like towards the latter stage of season 1, I had completely forgotten about Sayid being clubbed in the back of the head when trying to retrieve a signal from the make-shift radio. It only dawned on me again when Locke explained that he was the culprit towards the end of the series.

In fairness, if you don't like mysteries, don't watch Lost. You're absolutely right about the hooks, but thats what the series is all about. Personally, I spend a lot of time researching theories, and offshoots to that research. I've found out an incredible amount of stuff about various themes, countries, scientific endeavours, etc. For me, its not about "knowing" the answers, its the process of finding out thats the fun part. If thats not your thing... well, as I said, just don't watch it.

Agreed! Too many people whinging about not getting quick answers and Lost being drawn out. If it's that much of a chore then why do ye even bother?

    'lost thinks it's clever but it's not..ect ect .....

That's just what I'm saying! I don't want to stop watching because I'm addicted! I want another mystery-explanation fix! But I can't fully enjoy the drawn-out cliffhangers and the drip-fed revelations about the characters unless I know its wrapped up in the end...and the more revelations there are the less likely it is that a one-size-fits-all explanation will be delivered.

And you can't tell me that if in 2,3, or 4 years time when it all come downs to the last episode where everything has to be explained in one double, (probably triple!), episode and the it turns our to be just plain lame or even worse, not forthcoming at all, you'll be able to switch off your telly with a sigh and say "Well the ending was crap, we never found out why Ethan was a superhuman, or what the story was with the shaking trees, but it was all worth it because I didn't really need a tidy answer anyway and I enjoyed just waiting for it!". No - I think you'll be demanding your 100 hours of life back!

And no more "if you don't like it don't watch it" answers - I'm a just trying to get a discussion going - this is a blimin discussion board isn't it?

Only thing that annoys me at the minute is that I can't read half the discussions / theories on the 'net because I'm not up to speed with the goings on in the US-aired episodes.

Nobody is saying "if you don't like it don't watch it", but by your own admission you don't like the "drawn out cliffhangers and drip fed revelations". Since these are inherent to the show and since it will likely continue in the same vein for however many seasons the show runs, I just don't understand what you actually get out of the show. So I repeat, why do you watch a show which you don't really like? (and to clarify, I am not telling you what to watch, or not to watch, that's up to yourself.)
I hate to use such a cliché but you can't have your cake and eat it, when the mysteries are all revealed, it wil be game over for Lost.

TV programs for l33t h4x0r type people who need to know the answers 2 seconds after a question is posed.

Like Season 1 x 3 with an ending that leaves no question unanswered, no subtle detail not explained and somehow Kate ending up at my doorstep.... but thats a stretch :(

It does get better as you get into S2 and the whole addiction starts again.

Wow, that really enlightens me. I take it that it's some kind of geek or spa speak.

    You could say that.
