    Hi

Do you get a chance when importing a semi-classic (over 25 but under 30 years) as to whether you can elect for a ZV reg or does one have to take to 80 D ..... type ?

    Cheers

No. Only cars that are over 30 years have the option to choose between a Classic ZV-style registration or a year denominated reg.
So you have to take the 80 D type reg.

Classic is an insurance term only - it can refer to a car from 15 years old and upwards.

Vintage is the term for 30+ year old cars. ZV plates are an option for them.

I believe you have the option to change the reg to a 'ZV' once the car reaches 30 yrs.

Hello all, I am about to register 2 cars that are >30y old.

What is the value of the ZV plates as opposed to "normal" plates?

Is there some road status attached to this? Like you get the right of way at all crossings or something? :)

    Thanks

The ZV was just to give the car an original old look pre 87, before the 87-D-*** plates.
But in my mind I prefer the ZV as if you want to sell the car to a Dub with a say a KY (Kerry) he may be put off and find a D plated one.:)

The only value I have found is that it confuses rookie guards..... which is nice.

    A little off topic but,

Is it just me or does anybody else think the whole 06-D etc thing causes a lot of snobbery and de-value some good older motors?

This could be why such cars as Che**** and k*a and hy**dai etc get good sales here possibly robbing people of the joy of owning a better but older car. ( and by better I mean less transport and more car a thing all of us classicy's ;) know that character is an important factor in car ownership.)

    Or am I just nuts?

For me, I just chose the year/county plate simply because it was shorter.

    I agree.
With the pre-1987 reg system most people didn't know what year a car was.

Personally, I would like to see some sort of cherished/personalized/private reg system in place alongside our current system.
For example, you could choose a number along with your county letters (i.e. no year on plate) e.g. if you lived in Wicklow you could choose WW-100 or 100-WW, etc etc etc.

    Back to ZV plates.......

A point that is often overlooked when people are putting plates on older cars.

Large-digit plates look the part, whereas new-type narrow-digit plates just look wrong on a classic.

E.g. The plates on this Porsche are the correct style (large-digit), as opposed to the 'french style' plate below.

Some Dubs might also be put off with a 5 digit ZV plate as theirs are only 4 digit (I've had my Kildare ZV reg criticised for having too many digits)... If you're planning to resell then a good compromise might be to register with the new format to allow the next owner to reregister as a ZV. Mind you, if I was looking to buy a classic in Ireland then the format of the plate would be the least of my worries.

Heard something on the radio earlier about the Gardai getting new powers to seize cars that aren't correctly registered so the habit of keeping a car on foreign plates until its 30 might soon be gone...

You should be able to re reg your car to the county you live in if your G plate on your dub bought car bugs you as the plate on newer cars can affect the price.

RobaMerc, thats one of the reasons they brought in the new plate types, more cars sold = more VRT VAT.:)

Agree completely. Although car manufacturers change style and add external features so regularly these days that you don't need a reg plate to tell someone is driving "last years" car.

Which is one reason why I love old cars - they never go out of date.

It looks like I may be able to keep my French plates by asking for an "exemption". The thing is that if I register the cars here, I will have to re-register them again when I go back to France, eventually and that will cost me in excess of €1,000!! I am still investigating.

    And "exemption" ?

Really ? I never heard of that before, but I have always wondered why I see lots of cars at the shows still on foreign plates ?

    Maybe this is how/why !

Ah well, the French authorities tell me that when I go back to France I will be able to get my French reg documents back for free.... There is some sense in the state apparatus afetr all... :)
