I have just installed the whole Sky set-up except I'm using it as free to air.As a beginner I have a few questions.

I have 7 tv points in the house, all leading back to the one place in the attic. The dish is hung out in a prewired detached garage away from the house & the satellite feed comes up to the central point with the 7 cables in the attic.I do'nt want to have to run a seperate cable down to the sitting room so for now i have joined the satellite feed to the cable which runs down to the sitting room socket.I then made a cable which plugs into that standard socket on the wall & put the other end of the cable into the receiver and this works fine for now.

    Questions:

Can I put the receiver in the attic so that I can plug the UHF aerial directly into it & then have satellite & terrestrial TV from the receiver or does the receiver have to connect to the tv by scart ?

If so will that infra red sky remote extender thingy work for controlling the receiver ? if so, how ?

Can it be split out to the 6 other tv points that way also ?

If the receiver does have to be beside the television can the satellite feed
be split in the attic & an additional receiver used for "multi-room viewing".
I read that you need to use a dual LNB for this & run a second cable from the dish but did I not see a special splitter in Maplin today which would save me from doing this ?

    Thanks in advance

The Satellite LNB has 4 modes controlled by 14 or 18V and no 22KHz or 22KHz on. These two signals are fed from box. The four modes are a little like a radio with four short wave bands.

So you can't split the LNB signal. It must run using SATELITE QUALITY CT100 cable (available in Maplin) from LNB on dish to IF connector on Satellite receiever. A Quad LNB to fit Sky dish can be bought, the Dual LNBs only fit non-Sky dishes or old dishes used by Sky Analog.

It is a high level 800MHz to 2000MHz and can cause interference. Also without the CT100 the signal can be interferred with by other gadgets and higher frequency channels will be erratic.

Ordinary TV outlets, amplifiers, splitters, connectors, distribution systems must not be used with the LNB signal.

You need two coax from the attic. The aerial can come down and feed Digibox RF in. RF2 feeds the Distribution amp in the attic. If it is Sky compatible it will feed 9V out and 6MHz back from a "Sky eye" connected in Aerial cable at an distant TV for remote control.

Best quality is via SCART in RGB mode. The SCART cable also enables automatic WS switching and stereo.

See the ICDGopedia and the FAQs.

Thanks for that Watty, another few questions though:

If my terrestrial UHF aerial plugs into Digi RF in, can I get the terrestrial & satellite chanels outputting from RF 2 i.e. could the Digi receiver stay in the attic & I control it from the sitting room or if not would an AV sender in conjunction with the Magic Eye be a good solution ?

You mention that "Ordinary TV outlets, amplifiers, splitters, connectors, distribution systems must not be used with the LNB signal " , for what reason is this ? At the moment my LNB signal is coming from the attic down to the standard socket & then connecting to the receiver with the modified cable I made.

How do you rate those amplifiers for sky digital - I am considering getting an 8 way one.

    Cheers

The "Global" brand ones are fine.

Make sure it says "Sky Eye" or "Sky Remote" compatible.

Not a great idea to but Sky box in attic. You miss out on RGB. A video Sender of any kind (all have their own "eye" fro remote) will at least give stereo and remote control.

Ordinary outlets etc are designed for Radio / TV, often based on 1950s or 1960s VHF mechanical design. They don't even work that well on the top part of the UHF band. Satellite I.F. signal from LNB is up to more than twice the frequency and starts around UHF Ch68.

You wouldn't put wheelbarrow tyres on your car?
