Anybody know what happens to supermarket - TESCO - check-out staff if they make a genuine mistake and give out too much change ?

Does the discrepancy show up somewhere and does the employee have to make up the shortfall ?

Of course it'll show up, the money in the till will be counted and compared against the receipts from the register, if they don't add up the sales person will have to answer for it.

Theres already thread here about exactly the same thing. I don't know about Tesco but you can find general advice on the other thread.

As for it showing up. The tills will be setup in such a way that whoever is using it has everything logged against them. They'll certainly notice missing money and theres a decent chance it can be matched against a till operator.

You would think wouldn't you....but I worked in the cash office for a major department store and nearly every til had discrepancies...some running into the hundreds and because of their till layout/setup there was no way of attributing a loss on a till to one person in particular....AFAIK Tescos is different and every operator is given his/her own float...

Yes and no. The amount in the till at the end of the day and difference between what it should be, is known as "Overs and Unders". If you have more than you should have had, you're over; If you have less than you should have had, you're under. Simple, really.

You'll find at the end of the day, that few tills if any are spot on. There's always five cents here, two cents there that get done wrongly, and ultimately it all adds up. Few shops actually do anything about €2-€3 here and there. The prices are set to absorb the cost of checkout people making mistakes (and the shop keeps any money if the till is over).

If it's a significant amount (>€10 say), something might be said. If it's a huge amount (>€50), you'd probably be questioned and reprimanded (and I've heard of people being demoted/removed from the till for this kind of thing too). Most shops keep a log of all of the overs and unders (and who was on the till) so that patterns can be traced to see who is either incompetent or stealing.

Yea, when I worked In Statoil, people were always under money, I wasn't too bad, but I played the game a bit ;) I won't go into details. Other people got warnings etc, some one was sacked, because I think she was actually stealing though.

You were allowed + or - €3 most of the big money was because people drove off without paying for petrol.

A few years I was in a shoe shop and paid for new laces with a 50. The girl at the till messed the change up and gave me 10 too much. When I pointed it out to her she thanked me saying that the tenner would be coming out of here wages otherwise.

I used to work as a lounge boy yonks ago, if I made any cock ups it would come out of my wages. It only happened once thankfully and the other lounge staff chipped in with their tips to make up the difference. A serious cock up and you could end up working the night for free. So remember that the next time lounge staff give you too much change, you are NOT getting one up on the publican.
