IMO there is probably no point as you will be caught with it sooner or later upon which it will be taken from you. There is also a relatively large margin of error with detectors, i.e. they don't spot everything due to dirt and other factors

They are illegal to buy, sell, use, install, hold, look at, etc.

Waste of time now, most speed traps are using laser.
Radar has gone the way of the dodo, well, apart from some backwards counties;)

What about those car laser kits that are used to open automatic gates ;)

    from www.oasis.gov.ie/transport/motoring/road_traffic_speed_limits_in_ireland.html
It is an offence for anyone to use a speed meter detector in any vehicle in Ireland under the Road Traffic (Speed Meter Detectors) Regulations, 1991. Under this legislation, it is also an offence to import, fit and supply speed meter detectors and jammers.

The Gardai are empowered to seize this equipment if it is found in your vehicle or in your possession under the Customs Consolidation Act, 1876.

They are illegal, and more importantly shìte! The radar ones can be very sensitive and go off when you are driving past gates with a sensor on them. You will get so many "false positives" that you will just end up ignoring it, and it will defeat the purpose of getting one.

I don't know if the laser detecting ones work, but the chances are that if they have detected the laser, the laser has detected you, so two Penalty Points plus for you.

They are not laser detectors as a laser generally is a very focused beam. You would need to have your entire vehicle as one laser dectecting surface.

They are radar jammers sold as parking sensors or automatic garage door openers.

Those can be used to jam police laser traps. The cop gets an error on his device giving you enough time to find the brake before he can get a proper reading on you.

Do they not just pull the cars over then, surely they know that these things are what gives them errors, then just confiscate them?

Theres nothing illegal about owning a door opener, just so happens they interfere with police equipment.

Then it can be confiscated and the possessor hauled into court unless you can prove that you were opening the corresponding door!

    ^^Very True^^

A friend has radar in his Prelude and approaching traffic lights the particular one he has goes beserk. I don't know about down here, but in the North there are loads of radar controlled traffic lights. It's got to the stage where he just ignores it or switches it off in built up areas.

Funny enough, a tv remote control works on the same frequency as the lasers.

The laser detectors do work cos my uncle has one over here and it comes in fair handy...

Eh, no. TV remotes (indeed, all remotes) use Infra red.

A "Gunn" diode will emit the right frquency though, depsite it being a microwave transmitter.........now where did I put that RS Catalogue?

No Radar speed guns are used by the Gardai, only laser detectors.

Only things you will pick up on a radar detector are traffic light sensors, automatic door openers and those traffic signs set up to indicate your speed.

The radar they will pick up is the gatso van, and they generally give a good bit of notice of the van.
With regards to the laser detection they do pick up laser signal from the gun, but as was already said, by the time you hear it beep, you have been caught.
