Do TV ads work??

Sorry if it's already been discussed, I'm curious to see what people opinions are on the topic.

Not sure how long the ad has been out, but I've just saw it and thought it was quite funny.:D It's an ad for Revels, where two men are taken turns in eating a sweet until they find the flavour they don't like, in this case.. coffee.

Thought it was quite comical and has been one of the first ads that has actually made me laugh in a while. And surprisingly found myself wanting to buy some. Rarely an ad has had an effect on me and thought that maybe it was the fact that the ad was funny and made me laugh.

Do comical ads make you feel like buying the product? Within reason I guess, not everyone is going to go out and buy a €20k car or whatever. But you know what I'm talking about. I can't think of many other ads, one that springs to mind is the new "Evolution" ad for Guinness, everytime I see that ad, the little lizard at the end makes a sound like a burp and makes me laugh wanting to go out and buy a pint of guinness, which I don't even like :D

Not exactly sure what you're trying to hit at.
Are you try to see if comedy in advertising works? - it works on all media, not just TV.

Comedy is a sure fire hit for ads to creative a vibrant impact on the target market. It can assist in WOM advertising, as people like to share jokes, and where they've seen them.
It also can help reinforce a brand as young and trendy, which is why a lot of beer commercials will use comedy where possible.
"Clever" comedy can also tap into a more intellectual, and maybe more affluent market.

btw, here's the longer version of the ad you like:

Never liked that ad, you'd need something a bit less nerve-grating :)

Agree with whiskeyman though, comedy does work in all media.

The primary function of a TV ad (and all forms of advertising) is to increase brand awareness for the company/product/service.

If you never saw an ad for Revels (or Cadburys - if its them who make it), you would have no reason to differentiate between them and other sweets.

The advertising succeeds in giving you a familiarity with the product so you are more likely to purchase it.

In turn, with car ads, they work towards increasing your familiarity. They know no one is going to jump up and run down to the shops for a €35k BMW, but they do know that if you are familiar with the brand you are a lot more likely to buy from it. That is why a lot of higher-cost products are simply advertised via the brand and not a specific product.

    Completely agree with you!!

I wouldn't completely agree with that, of course brand awareness is one aspect which if memory serves correct there's an add on tv such as Toyota which doesn't actually promote any actual product other than the brand. But most other car ads are advertising some make/model. See below.

And I'd say most other ads are advertising one product or another. Rarely have I seen an ad for just the brand without some sort of product being advertised.

There's an ad on tv for Suburu Impreza with a little kid driving the remote control car on the beach. Another for I think Toyota Safera for the people carrier with the two little kids talking about the various aspects of the car. Can't remember the make/model of the car, but there was another people carrier advertised a couple years back with a british comedian (can't think of his name, welsh fella, griff jones??) counting the number of positions you could make the seats into.

There's a few more that I can't think of at the top of my head.

They're made by Masterfoods (Mars). Only reason I know this is because I used to work for them.

But getting back to the point

If this is the case, why don't more companies advertise in this form. Well obviously it depends on the product I suppose. But it would generate word of mouth which in turn would lead to greater exposure of the ad on the target market.

And no, I'm not totally sure what I'm getting at. Was just when I saw that ad, it was one of the few times I actually thought to myself, "I want to get up and buy that product" regardless of whether I liked it or not such as the new Guinness Ad

I suppose not every product can have a comedic slant on things...for example, you couldn't imagine the National Safety Council using comedy in their drink/driving ads.
