I'm looking at an 85 Saab 900 Glxi as a project car with a mate. Only major problem it has is the gearbox. Sometimes it won't gat second and sometimes it won't get third. When I checked the gearbox for oil it was empty. Anybody know if this is possibly the reason for it not finding gear or is that solution too simple??? Obviously it's a factor though. I don't want to buy it if the gearbox is knackered

I thought it was a project car you wanted?! Sounds like you have one, first project - learn gearboxes! Clealry no fluid is er an issue. How long has it had no fluid and how much driving has been in that state?

I know it's an issue Mike!! See I don't know how long it's been like that and how long it's been driven without oil in the gearbox. My main worry would be locating a gearbox for this car. It's the 4 speed manual box. a lot of them have the 5 speed box

Good chance for an upgrade maybe then. I imagine you'd pick up a box fairly cheaply from a good breakers but you may have to travel a long way.

All saab 900 gearboxes will give trouble.
2nd and 4th are usually the first warnings of impending doom.
The problem with 900's is that the gearbox is underneath the engine and it is quite a big job to replace , I would say that you will have trouble finding a good box as they aren't exactly common and good gearboxes are as rare as rocking horse shít.
