Best/Cheapest place to get an acoustic guitar fixed? Or should I attempt a DIY job!

Basically, the nut [(I think its called that) - the place where the strings slot into) is chipped at the top bass string, so I cant play the string properly now at all

Just wondering would this be easy enough to fix myself given Ive no expericence fixing guitars, and if so how should I go about doing this or should i just bring it somewhere to be fixed.

Where should I bring it and how much should I expect to pay?

    Thanks guys

Nuts are very easy to remove and replace, and its always good to know the way around an instrument from a DIY point of view.

But if you dont feel 100% confident in your abilities to do something like this or have never done anything like it before then dont, esp if you dont have a backup guitar or a cheap guitar to practice on first. Somewhere like Musician Inc will be fine, the guys there are generally sound and have done some good repair jobs for me in the past. Pricewise you would be looking at around 5 euro the nut, 8 euro for strings and prob 20-30 euro for installation and setup.

Given that nuts have to be adjusted for slot height/width and angle for optimum playing its not something that someone who isnt sure what they are doing should do.

Admitedly its very easy to install a nut, and its not that hard to adjust the nut either, but I have seen quite a few people damage their guitars during nut removal. If some of the neck finish is on the nut and hasnt been fully removed before knocking the nut out you can get some bad finish chips.

Also (although unlikely) the nut made be stuck down with epoxy or set into a channel which can cause damage to the headstock if one is not extremely cautious.

As the OP said himself, "Ive no expericence fixing guitars". Unless he has someone at hand to help him along or an old guitar to practice on first he should really get this done professionally imo. As simple as it is to do any neck job can damage a guitar beyond repair and shouldnt be done by someone who doesnt know what they are doing.
