What is your favourite registry cleaner? I currently use ccleaner, as it doesn't take up much diskspace and has several different functions.

Tune up utilities 2006, it has reg cleaner as well as about fifteen other important apps all in the one package. Highly recommended!

Registry mechanic. I hear MS Regclean is also quite good.

Registry cleaner seems to be a quite popular program not necessarily the best. CCleaner also offers you the option of choosing which programs are launched at start-up, very handy if you can't remember how that is configured. It's also possible to disinstall a program directly from ccleaner, which for me has been more effective than doing it the more conventional way. There are much fewer registry keys remainining after disinstalling with ccleaner.

Never heard of MS Regclean. What does it do exactly? How much diskspace does it take up?

MS Regclean is very basic, size is about 800kb, you dont install it. Just run the single exe file when you want to.
When you install, uninstall or delete programs some registry keys are left behind and not removed, even when you use the proper uninstall program.
Your system wont like all those unnecessary keys clogging up the registry over time. Its designed to remove those keys.

It takes up 781.4 kByte and according to this site
http://www.chip.de/downloads/c1_downloads_12992066.html it has to be downloaded. Can you please point me to the site where it doesn't have to be downloaded?

yeah, i know that much. I always run teh regedit afterwards and search for any leftover keys, although sometimes if the company name is obscure these can be difficult to find.

Sure whats a few kb unless your counting :) i think you got mixed up with what i said. You have to download it, but you dont have to install it on your machine, its just a single file. You run the file and the application runs, its not an install file

    MS Regclean

Just be careful if you use one of the "clean it" type products (cleans registry, removes temp files, cookies, etc etc.) They have a tendency to delete your Outlook e-mails too!

What's the benefit of cleaning up your registry?

to get rid of unneccessary files, bookmarks etc. that clog up your system and make it run slower...;)

Thanks for the reply. I don't understand how it could cause the computer to run slower though. Is it not just a list of settings, etc.

    from http://www.google.ie/url?sa=X&start=0&oi=define&q=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_registry:
In computing, the registry is the part of an operating system which records the relationship between hardware, memory space and addressing. In general terms it is a database which stores settings and options for the operating system, especially for Microsoft Windows 32-bit versions. It contains information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of the PC.

yep, it doesn't remove any files. only settings stored in the database. What it does remove is references to files or folders that are no longer present on the system.
