I've never found a free one that was much good, tbh.

Currently, I'm using O&O Defrag 8, and its wonderful. The MS one is a stripped down version of Diskeeper, which is surprisingly better than the Windows default (must have been based on a beta build, or something).

    Yeah O&O is rather excellent.

It costs 45 euro though, is it really worth the buy? Aren't there are freeware versions?

I like CONTIG and PAGEDFRG from www.sysinternals.com they complement defrag. Run contig on the files listed in the defrag report.

    Contig - defrags individual files,
    pagedfrg - defrags system files

Other Option is to move the files off the disk and defrag and then put them back on. Are the files that aren't being defraged listed as "unmoveable" ?

Have you run defrag in safe mode ?
Have you removed all the junk that you don't really need ?

The laptop has a 6.4gb Drwtson file , deleted it and it appeared again.

Its in Doc/settings/Appdata/ windows on a user account no longer associated with that Windows install, ie windows was reinstalled over an existing install  (IT legends tbh) but the old All.Users.Windows account is no longer valid but creates a 6.4gb Log off Drwatson on reboot.

No virus according to updated AVG or any spyware. Cant wipe the damn thing as it has software on it i cant replace.

If the drive is NTFS then into the DOS prompt
    CACLS c:\*.* /T /E /C /G Administrator:F then try to tidy up again

Am not sure if "system" are treated as unmovable - maybe changing the S attrib ?
