hello,im wondering if anyone has any advice on getting started as a writer.
my friend has been writing privately for some time and is thinking of trying to go professional.
however shes no idea where to start. i suggested that she concentrate on writing short pieces and trying to get them published and try moving up that way by geting a bit of a name and a few reviews before attempting to approach a publisher but i dont know any magazines that accept short stories.
so can anyone help with maybe some magazines , websites, publishers etc?
    thanks!

Galway is known for the arts. Go to seminars, workshops, readings, and book fairs there. The most important thing to do is to network with other writers and meet as many agents and publishers as you can. Get their business cards. Make up a card for yourself and give it to them, too. It would not be bad to also have a portfolio of things you have written, as well as anything you have published. Network, network, network! You can do this in Dub, too, although Galway gets a great draw certain times of the year. Then after meeting these people, followup with an occasional note to them, and perhaps a sample of your work (provided it fits with what they write or publish). Good luck.
