Disk boot failure

Ok, so I recently built a new rig and installed my old cd-rw drive in it. No bother there and the old PC was working grand as well. I then bought a DVD-RW drive for the new rig and put back in the CR-RW into the old one. Now though, when I try and boot the old PC it comes up with "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". I need to get some data of this hardrive. Will inserting my XP disc reformat it or will it just do a repair without data loss. I have already disconnected the cd-rw drive and tried various jumper settings to no avail.

Do search here computers forum/ search xp restore fixboot fix mbr. U,ll see threads how to fix xp hd/not booting pc ,SOUNDS LIKE YOUR REGISTRY is scrambled or mbr ,master boot record is partly erased.or do google search windows xp repair registry mbr.YOU CAN BOOT OFF xp cdrom ,use restore commands from cdrom to fix the os ,,unless your hd is faulty ,which is very unlikely.u may have a conflict between the hd and the dvd drive, they shud be on separate cables, ide, set up both as master ,with jumper, primary,be gentle with hd, or else put back old cdrom drive ,as master on second ide cable.Use restore functions from winxp cdrom, go to bios, set boot order cdrom 1st ,hardrive second.save new settings to bios, then see if winxp cd boots, press r for repair console.
