Hi, myself and my boyfriend are planning to go to India around the start of July for about 3 months. According to the Lonely Planet travel guide monsoon season starts then. Was just wondering if anyone has been to India at that time of year and actualy experianced the monsoon?? Is the weather really bad?? We were thinking of flying into Goa and then going from there. Any other info about the place would be great.
    Thanks.

    Hi,

I wasn't in India for the monsoon myself, but you could probably get some answers here or here.

    Enjoy your trip.

I was in Mumbai last year during the monsoon. I left around the 10th July after being there for 5 weeks. So I saw the monsoon gradually arrive. It was bad enough. Certinaly not ideal travelling weather. As far as I know Goa shuts down during monsoon season. the hotels remain open, but I think the whole atmostpehere of goa dies. You can get the top hotels for very cheap prices.

As for the rain, it was varied. Could go three days with only a few showers during the day, to absolutely bucketing down non stop all day for 3 days.

The monsoon arrives at different times as you go north. We went to Delhi for a weekend during monsoon in mumbai and it had not reached there yet.

Does it have to be during the monsoon. I am just back from a seperate trip last week and it was really nice weather. not too hot, although weather is rising.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks alot for both replies. We want to go as soon as possible but you know it all depends on how quick we get the cash together !! Hopefully be able to go the start of June. I don't know anyone who has been to India, you can read books and stuff but it's no substitue for real life experiance.

I've spent just under 6 months in India and Nepal. I went to Nepal in the Autumn just as Monsoon was ending. The Monsoon stayed on a little late that year and there was quite a lot of rain in the first two weeks. The rain was heavy on some days and lasted for a few hours at a time. Definitely not weather you want to be travelling in.

The travel experience was fantastic and India is a fascinating country that is well worth a visit. It is also very cheap. A hundred US dollars a week was loads per person about 5 years ago, not sure what it is like now.

Personally I would not go during the Monsoon. Don't you get enough rain in Ireland? My recommendation would be to go somewhere else or wait until the Autumn.

    Enjoy!

Yeah, we are thinking of going to the Philippine Islands now. We want to go somewhere in early summer so it looks like India is out of the question because of the weather. Anyone been to the Philippines ??
Thanks for all your replies on India, they were very helpfull.
