Just get 1 that has 512meg ram,3.2oghz pentium 4 , with at least graphics card,UPGRADEABLE to,ATI RADEON 128MEGVIDEO CARD ram.cost 800euro approx.I,d prefer to get a jaguar pc in dublin, cos then i can specify exactly the graphics card i want, ie radeon 128meg vram pci -x grahics slot.do search jaguar sys dublin, at google.ie ,or look at sticky ,on top of computers forum here , where to buy pc parts.shops, i d, go for an amd64 pc,,faster and cheaper for games, but dell dont sell amd pc,s. YOU WILL need pci-x graphics slot, dell pc cost 1,050.YOU WILL need pci-x slot if u want to upgrade grahics card in 2 years, agp slots are ALMOST OBSOLETE,new games in 2008 may require pci-x graphics card.

man this guy makes no sense, doesn't know wut hes on about.

building your own is always better and more interesting but i assume you want to play a game from time to time correct, then the rest is just surfing the net etc?

Dell are only with intel correct, so you can only opt for a intel CPU
Get at least 1gig of ram, for one because xp is a ram hog and its more future proof.
To be able to play games at good settings a geforce 6600GT is the minimum + i think dell only offer them in PCI-E so the AGP/PCI-E stuff doesnt come into consideration

If your in a hurry ,get pentium 4pc from dell 3.2 gigahertz , they have only 1 pc that has pci-x graphics card, its 829 euro in sale, 5 day sale, its Dimension, 5150 ,with radeon x300 pci-x graphics card installed/comes with free 4color printer. IF u wanna play new games like ut 2007, u will need a pci-x grahics card.Get that 1 ,its a great pc, i,d strongly advise u to order the 17inch lcd monitor, extra 48 euros, its a great pc , just dont get the 550euro pc s ,from dell cos there is no way of upgradeing the graphics to play doom3 or hl2 or any modern games.IE they have no agp or pcix slots,to put in a card.
WHEN U ORDER u must specify 17ich lcd, otherwise u just get standard 15inch, monitor.ITS GOT 512MEG RAM, its a great pc, if u can afford 830, or 880euro with 17inch lcd screen. And u do get a free printer as well.
I just like building pcs ,its like a hobby .Remember the 550euro ,pcs are no use for playing games like doom3, farcry ,or halflife 2.

What do you think of Dell? ANy good?

The following words cannot be used together:

    Those keywords are :

    Dell

    Good

    This thread loses.

    Get a:

    Pci-ex 939 mobo
    A64 3700+ or greater
A gig of CL2.5 ram (2x512mb) or better
And I'd recommend getting a 7800Gt, models can be found for around €300.

For example here is my shopping list,

gamer, you've posted a giant illegible load of words 4 times in this thread. Whats the point ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

My head always hurts trying to read gamer's posts. It's gibberish tbh.

Anyway, back to the original question.

Since you're not familiar with PC specs, I think it's safe to rule out you building your own PC.

Despite what some people say there is nothing wrong with Dells. They make good PCs. Yes, if you're looking for the absolute best there is in a gaming machine then other PCs beat them solid. But for a good all round machine that can handle games, that comes prebuilt with support only a local call away, you can't beat Dell.

I'd recommend the 9150 or 5150 series. What exact type depends on your budget? How much you willing to spend?

the cards u are mentioning are complete ****

for one Dell only works with nvidia so rule the ATI cards out and 2, like i said at least a 6600GT or the 6800

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,227 ✭✭✭gamer

Obviously, hes not a techie, so go for dell model .with pc-x graphics ,get 17inch lcd monitor, not standard15inch lcd.Cost 860euro approx/with free 4color printer, sale is on now ,4days left.
THERES ONLY 2 PCS, with pci-x grahics cards, the second1 is 1450euro,approx.
DON,T even look at the 550euro dells, there no use for gaming, in my opinion.
Theres no way of upgrading them,in regard to graphics cards.

I would be willing to spend 1,200 euro.

Is there any graphics card or processor I should specify to Dell when I call them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

3.2Ghz P4 minimum. And a 256Mb video card. You might have to spend a lil bit more than 1200 to get something decent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,056 ✭✭✭applehunter

    OK thanks.

Is a video card the same as a graphics card?

    yep

Nonsense...dell work with whoever happens to be the cheapest supplier at time of production.

They'll come with either nV or ATi depending on when it was built.

@OP; check out their outlet site if you wanna save a few quid.

Oh and to whoever reckons dell's can't cut it, my year old 8400 does a decent job of running all the latest games at reasonably high fps...once you get rid of the sh*tware they put on it in production and reinstall the OS, the parts will perform just as well as any home build...and if you're wiley enough to sit and wait, you'll get it cheaper than you could build for...

    dim8400eeaah2gt4bh.jpg

After VAT that came to just under €700
Why was it refurbed? Dented case and a scratch on the front panel.

[edit] oh and that's not a photoshop job in case you think it is

OK,my advice is get model Dell,9150,price,1,236euro, 1024meg main memory, ORDER the 256meg 6800 geforce video card/169euro extra , it has 320gig hard drive, .Order the 19inch,lcd monitor ,17inch monitor is standard. You , may order the 19inch for 96euro extra ,thats 1470euro approx , you need to quote E value code,IEDHSONL-DO2915 ,to get it at that price.
With a 19inch monitor lcd, that is a great gaming pc, that will play doom3 or any game at in high detail at hi resolution, with loads of space for mp3s or dvds or game storage.
AND you wont need to expand it,cos its got everything,it has dvd/dvd writer/cdwriter combo drive, and 5.1 surround sound, order the resource cd, contains drivers and diagnostic/prog,extra 6euro.

I JUST NOTICED THE POST ABOVE,yeah, get the pc 700euro ,pentium 4 ,1024meg main memory, then u can pay some1 to put in dvd./rw drive if you need 1,get at least pentium 4 3.0 ghz ,then get a 19inch lcd monitor,it will cost u 163euros , so you are saving at least 300euro,s .There may be a few scratches on case but thats, no big deal. When you are ordering specify the xt radeon 128meg pci-x card, or else the 256megram video card pci-x, the 256meg card is faster, but they are both good cards. You need a credit card to order from the dell outlet store, try and get the 3.20ghz pentium4 pc.
Does any1 know, do the dell pcs with intel graphic acellerator video card, have TV out or dvi connnections? Is it possible to get dvi to scart cable, for playing dvds from pc?

    Bit late mate...that was 10 months ago and I snapped it up...but there were some half decent bargains on outlet this morning...I liked this;
    http://outlet.dell.com/Emea_Dfo/EuDispatcher?target=SpecPage&serviceTag=EPBZLKAT&sessionID=DmVHsxXq!549942903!1344999325!1139152199979

Dual core cpu and a PCI-ex board that is future proofed....get an Acer 19" WS tft from amazon for €265 and you're done.

    http://www.komplett.ie

gamer: 128MBs is better than 256MBs, how exactly?
