change the colours and grapics it looks like someone broke their nose and sneezed on the screen, and would this not be better in some area of the comp forums?

Don't be silly. AH is the dumping ground after all.

if your going to be doing something like you outlined above, id recommend you go for a content management system like joomla http://www.joomla.org/

its a bit more complex, but simple after a while and you do need a database for it.
    Ive used it myself, www.sparky-internet.com

It is pretty good for a first attempt.
You should learn css as it will improve the look of the fonts and really cleans up the look of the page.

i'm not having a go at your web development skills, but you needn't have done a course to build a site like that. there's tonns of resources online. it seems like a mickey mouse course to me. let us know the name of it, so we know when to avoid them!

take a look at this www.lynda.com

    keep it up!

As has been said before, give the guy a break, it's his first attempt. :)

The course is in the DCU its for Transition year students(and the occassional 5th years)...
You get a week to learn basic HTML and then use it on a web design of your choice.
We only got to use editplus and IExplorer. Everyting else was restricted even paint!!!

    tanx to all
it was a first attemp and i am proud of it
its not brilliant (i know that)
but im proud of my work

Man when I look back on the site design I made in first year of college in my Web Communications module I shudder...

http://www.student.dcu.ie/~duffs3/assign/ < look at how crap that looks...

But it's functional and that's what matters... get the basics before you go worrying about design and making it look purrdy.

I like to think I've come a long way since making that site

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,193 ✭✭✭[Jackass]

fair play, nice job. I wouldn't put professional programmer & graphic designer on your cv just yet, but it's a good attempt.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 338 ✭✭alic

i think thats good it looks neat and cool

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭Setun

It's functional, it does what it says it does. If I was doing it, I'd pick any font other than Times New Roman, it's too boring and it's not particularly suited to the style of your website. But seen as though your resources were very limited it's no too shabby.

BTW Where's the gamecube section! ;)

So YOU'RE the ones who took up LG01/LG25 the last few weeks *narrows eyes and plays dramatic music*

At least they taught you the basics of HTML. Not too bad for a first site. I'd suggest www.webmonkey.com to further your knowledge of web design... (if you're interested that is)

Oh..aand... there's no such thing as a <bgcolor> tag....bgcolor is an attribute that you put into other tags. If it hasn't been graded yet, I'd suggest removing that before it gets graded. Could lose you a few marks. either that I've just conveniently missed it in every web design tutorial I've ever read..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 338 ✭✭alic

i already got marked i got an A*(1 of the top grades)

    where does it say bgcolor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

    Good. Good for you.

    Wow.. well done :)
    where does it say bgcolor
    <Center><bgcolor="red">PS2 - Cheats / Latest releases / Reviews</bgcolor="red"></center>

when somebody says "look at my website design" for some reason it's a reflex for me to read over the code :o.... yeah I need a new hobby..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

There's nothing special about it, but if it's your first website I can't really comment. A lot of people would do worse. Were you not allowed to scale down images? The Mircosoft one is 1500px * 1500px, I **** you not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,439 ✭✭✭ando

yea fair play. Its good for your first attempt, but its still $hite

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,382 ✭✭✭✭AARRRGH

    alic -

Take a look at how other websites structure themselves, what colours they use, and what fonts they use. I learnt HTML from viewing the source code of webpages I liked, and then editing them.

Your webpages reminds me of the first webpage I made - 13 years ago. I'm surprised the colleges haven't moved on from using <center> etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

I teach HTML. It is good for a first attempt. You still have a lot to learn. Check out using styles and style sheets.

HTML validation fails though. need a DOCType for starters. :D

Seriously though, decent first effort, I could barely use a PC before I started college, so you've already got a head start on people like me. :)

Im in a software development course and we had to to a basic webpage for a small project and all our lecturer wanted was lots of pretty colours.

I had a nice standard system of colours each page was identically formatted and looked great.
    Got an ok mark

Some of the others had webpages that looked like they should have been back in the day of flower power and got very high marks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

    I'd recommend changing the background.
Tiled backgrounds like that look very amateurish.
