Best modem/router for Xbox Live with BT BB

I currently use the BT supplied prestige 660 modem to connect to XBOX live.

I can play games on xbox live - however I cannot play against a friend of mine who is also a BT subscriber.

After reading various articles - I tested my NAT using the xbox diagnostics and I'm getting a reading of NT:3 ( strict )

    Taken from : http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/Connect/diagnosing.htm

Find NT: x, where x is your NAT type. 1 means open, 2 means moderate, and 3 means strict.

But let’s say you’re behind a router that’s a strict NAT. When you want to host a game, you now have something to consider. Anyone else who’s behind a router that uses a moderate or strict NAT may not be able to connect to your session.

I've tried changing everything on the prestige to bring the NAT rating down to 2 or 1

    Forwarded all ports ( 1 - 65535 ) to the XBOX

    Enabled and disabled uPNP

    - No joy

I'm ready to throw the Prestige away and buy a wireless router/modem instead.

I've some experience with the Netgear DG834G and I like the one device fits all approach ( no issues wondering if two devices are compatible etc ) However the DG834G is not XBOX certified compatible and I dont see a device that is certified compatible that combines a modem/router/wireless access point in one.

So can anyone recommend such a device! *phew*

    Thanks

goto (works with my zyxel) advanced setup, NAT - select sua only - and click edit details -were it says "all ports" in the ip address part, type the ip being received on the NIC your modem is connected to, - appply - save and see if that helps. My zyxel is an older model *i think* but may have same UI, if it works, it'll keep ya going till you find a new one. ;)

    Hi,

If you are able to play games against other people but not your friend, could the problem be your friend's configuration? and who is trying to "host" the games?

Also, forwarding some or all ports to an Xbox isn't required if you have uPnP (Universal Plug And Play) turned on. I have both an Xbox and an Xbox 360. I forward NO ports to either of them as I have uPnP turned on. Everything works fine.

As for routers, I can't recommend the DG834 as I owned one for about a year. I finally bought a Linksys WRT54GS, it's not an all-in-one modem + wireless router but it's far superior to the Netgear model. Its best features are QoS and the option to install a 3rd party firmware. And don't worry about Xbox certification, both wireless routers mentioned work fine. If you are unsure, just do a quick Google search :)
