    Hey all,

Got tickets for a world cup quarter final on July 1st in Gelsenkirchen & was wondering if anyone was aware of any (preferably cheap) airlines which would get me there... or to Dortmund or Cologne which aren't too far away. Thanks :)

for cheapies from Ireland Ryanair to hahn might be man. You could also try Aer Lingus to Dusseldorf which may have better transport links.

edit: Germany has an excellent rail system so wherever you arrive you will be able to make a good connection , especially during the world cup.

i'd go with aer lingus to dusseldorf or german wings (www.germanwings.com) to cologne.

if you're in a group get a 'länder ticket' for the train to gelsenkirchen. details on http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/travelservice/laender_tickets.shtml. it's the SchönerTagTicket Nordrhein-Westfalen. buy it at the machines (which have an english option) and it's €2 cheaper. the only snag is that it won't allow you to travel on ic and ice trains, but having a look at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en, i see that there are lots of re and s-trains going that way, so it shouldn't be a problem. in a lot of german cities they'll also accept that ticket on the buses and trams
