The 6600GT is a good card but is kinda going down the list performance-wise. Have a look at the 7xxx series of cards. Also, an AGP card won't work with your mobo, you'll need to get a PCI express card.

Other than that, everything looks cool. Komplett are probably your best bet but have a look at http://www.pixmania.com or some of the sites listed in the stickies on the forum.

If you are going to be gaming I would go for AMD chip.

Right so if I was to replace the motherboard with this one :

Sapphire Pure Innovation, Socket-939, ATI RX480+SB450, ATX, GbLAN, PCI-Ex16 (312895)

and the chip with this on :

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2GHz Socket 939, 1MB, BOXED w/fan (309861)

are we talking about a big difference.

The machine will be used for gaming, but primarily for software development..

and the graphics card with this one:

    Club3D Radeon X800RX 256MB GDDR3 PCI-Express, Dual-DVI-I, Tv-Out, Retail (311828)

I think you should be looking at something dual core, yes. Either a Pentium D or an Athlon X2. If you want the machine to last you a while it's definitely the way to go.

No experience with Radeon cards, sounds good though. Mobo and proc are definitely an improvement. :)

in terms of dual core processors which would be the best to go for from the following:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2GHz Socket 939, 1MB, BOXED w/fan (309861)

    or

    Intel Pentium D 830 3.0GHz Socket LGA775, 2MB, BOXED w/fan (309927)

What is the main difference between the two?

    Cheers...
