So many sums!

I found this enjoyable. In the following sum, each letter stands for a different number between 0 and 9 (though not all of these numbers are present in the sum). S is equal to 3.

    S O
    + M A N Y
    S U M S

    The question is, what is O x Y? Is it (a) 0, (b) 2, (c) 36, (d) 40 or (e) 42?

(I can't get them to line up, but you're adding a two digit number to a four digit number and getting a four digit number)

If anyone has any similar puzzles, I'd be very interested to see them. They're great fun.

Thanks Skipper. So I should use the code tags and fiddle around with the lines until they line up?

w66w66, that's exactly the kind of thing we need for this thread:) I got an answer which works, so I presume that's the right one. A good puzzle.

    I came up with 72.

First rule: Grandson is d days old, so the son is 7d days old.

Second rule: Grandson is m months old, so grandpa is 12m months old.

Because the son is seven times as old as the grandson, that means that if the grandson is m months old, the son is 7m months old.

    So their total, 12m + 7m + m = 20m = 120 years * 12 months = 1440 months.

    Therefore, m = 72.

    Therefore:

    The grandpa is 12m months old = 864 months old = 72yo.
    The son is 7m months old = 504 months = 42yo.
    The grandson is m months old = 72 months = 6yo.
