Stances

Just wondering, in boxing, I was encouraged to either fight southpaw (I am left handed) or orthodox. Choose in the beginning and never go back.

In Judo, it's similar but you're encouraged to learn stuff on your "bad side" too.

In BJJ, I don't know if this really applies. Maybe it does. I got the impression they didn't emphasis "sidedness".

In TKD, I got the impression they did it both ways.

So in MMA, do you guys try to learn stuff from a left leading hand and a right leading hand or just stick to your natural preference?

    How about the non-MMA MA?

A question like this came up a couple of weeks ago.

Basically in MMA your stance is usually the same as Thai Boxers, maybe a bit wider, maybe with your hands a bit lower, maybe not.

Generally you lead with your weaker hand forward, like you would have in boxing. Some people find this troublesome because their power hand and power leg are on opposite sides. Gernerally I would look to incorporate your "shooting" stance into your power hand side.

So for most people this would mean, leading with your left leg, using it for your penetration step when you shoot and kicking with your right (power) leg.

Some people can fight with either leg leading. I can box pretty well southpaw (relative to my orthodox side, not relative to half decent boxers), but my shoots with my right foot leading are terrible, also shooting that way on an orthodox fighter is a big no-no.

As with all Martial Arts your stance is about giving you an effective platform to launch attacks and defend throughout the fight.

Bottom line if you train your weak side enough it will become your good side, who has that time though?

So I'd like to ad a question for people.

would it make sence to "become" southpaw given that you will encounter more orthodox opponants than your orthodox opponants will encounter southpaws?

I am best figthing out of left, and practice this, and also I can hold the fort in right stance too.

in KM I practice all weapons and gun disarms from every side and angle.
