why do some pc/laptops running xp allow old dos based games to run and others dont? I was looking to run "the day of the viper" an old amiga game. i know i need an emulator for that one but for others why do they work in my work pc and not on the laptop at home?

    Different hardware?
There are several ways to get DOS games working on XP.
    1. Emulator - DOSBox - emulates a dos pc and works pretty well for older DOS games
    2. VDMSound - emulates soundblaster 16 soundcard, joystick and some other bits and bobs. With this I am running TIE Fighter CD perfectly on my xp system.
    3. Compatibility modes - XP can run in windows 98 compatibility mode, which can have success with some DOS games, but not with others.
    4. Interpreters - I use ScummVM to play old lucasarts adventure games. It is excellent.
