Hi guys, can someone answer some basic questions for a newbie - it
seems satellite TV is a complex business for us beginners!

    1) where can I find an expert to install a dish/box and what should I
expect to pay them? I am way too clueless to do this myself!

    2) where is a good place in Dublin to buy the equipment I need and
what should I actually get in your opinion? What is a ballpark price
    for the necessary equipment?

    3) What stations are available for free and legally in Dublin? Do you get
a really good reception usually or does it vary? My NTL cable reception
    is crap :-D !

    many thanks!!

Have you considered Sky Digital? The installation is free and you pay €20-odd a month, 12 month contract, then you can cancel the contract and do whatever you like with the equipment. If you're not interested in other satellite TV for now, that's the easiest and probably cheapest way to get it.

So long as you have clear view of the sky in a south-easterly direction you should get good reception. It's fairly obvious from the direction of other dishes around you where the satellite is located. With digital TV, it sort of either works or it doesn't. It's the same with NTL Digital, which might be an even easier solution for you, assuming you're having problems with NTL's analogue service. I think NTL is doing first three months free, Sky is doing first four months half price I think.

I dealt with Tony at www.satellite.ie and was very pleased with the service.
there's a sticky thread above that lists other places.

Sky Digital is a good deal in some respects. You pay a monthly rental and own the equipment after 12 months. they do the install.
Lidl often do a complete kit for €100. watch out for the offer.
Maplins do a complete kit for €169.
that gets you up and running on Astra2 satellite. often called 28e.
Next step up is to start into the world of other satellites and would be more expensive.

    3) What stations are available for free and legally in Dublin?
Thousands possible. www.flysat.com lists everything thats free.
go to www.lyngsat.com to see all channels including pay stuff.

Do you get a really good reception usually or does it vary?
crystal clear digital in the main.

My NTL cable reception is crap
    I know what you mean.
