    HI

I heard Marty Whelan on 2FM the other morning saying that RTE was in for some rebranding. It was early, I had just woken up - but I've seen 'no change' in the styling... is this on the cards or what??

    Haven't heard anything...

The logo is eleven years old this year, but its a simple and effective design and I don't think needs a change. They've spent quite a bit of effort since September 2003 getting every part of RTÉ to use a consistant image and its only really coming together now, only for them to change it again?

Incidently RTÉ has after what seems like a million years finally updated its press release section of the website - no mention of a rebrand there.

I thought so too. From what I recall I heard on Wednesday morning - Marty and some other chap - don't know who were talking about a new marketing team coming and introducing changes. Then they started to take the mick about the last time they got marketing people in - only to change things and get the push. Maybe it didn't mean anything... but they did mention specifically the RTE branding and a change in colour. I guess there's no such thing as a listen again feature on the 2FM website?

The RTÉ logo is a stunning piece of design and ought not to be changed for anything. When executed in white it is on a par with the BBC's.

They copped on to this about two years ago and it really freshens it up, especially when you see it dissolve on screen at the start of certain programmes: RTÉ History, RTÉ Factual, RTÉ Sport etc (even if another direct rip-off from the BBC)

And the colour version is still as fresh as the day it was launched, even if the colours are ever so slightly 'so 1995' :)

A beautiful simple design with elegant font and distinctive celticised E. This logo also heralded the official reintroduction of the fada which had been missing for years on end - indeed I don't think it was ever adopted on a formal basis since the establishment of the station, even though the fada does feature in the 1966 Act which gave the station its current name.
As of 1995 all RTÉ literature now features it as standard.

No way should it be ditched - it has at least another ten years of life left in it.

I'd like to hear Marty's feature if anyone has it, only most of 2fm doesn't do online replays unfortunately because of all the music content.

What is very likely to be happening at the minute is a wholescale revamp of certain elements of presentation. News is going to be ripped apart over the summer, probably Prime Time too, and it's been three years since the station idents (continuity bits between the programmes) were introduced, and they generally have a life of three years too, so they may be ditched so maybe it was to these that Marty was referring?
I sincerely hope the station logo is not touched with so much as a ten foot pole.

That logo is probably the best logo on TV or radio anywhere. Simple, effective, recognisable.

    I like the logo.

However I hate hate (let me repeat) hate the Branding of RTE with it.

As a coporate logo it is great but it is now over used by RTE.

I cann't see them changing the logo now that their branding mashine has gone into over drive.

You will also note the very slightly celticised R.

New on screen look for RTE One from Friday November 3. No new logo or anything though.

Are they doing this just because BBC One changed its onscreen look?

    :)

Not really, they've been planning it for a while but most of it has been done by RED BEE MEDIA, the company that designed BBC1's new look and wrecked ITV, Sky and every other channel in the UK with "Real people doing everyday things".

Go to www.redbeemedia.co.uk and go to "Creative" for examples of the crap we can expect.

In fairness ITV never had much of a look to ruin!

In fairness, that's bull. Red Bee produce idents, which the companies in question approve and give the money over for. If they are crap idents, it's the fault of the company in question, not Red Bee.

I see on TV Room Plus:

"The new on-screen graphics package will allow for in-vision clips and 'coming next' alerts."

    Oh no...

But RTE are just trying to fit in with the crowd after BBC/ITV/Channel 4/five/Sky's "success", like they always have done.

It's turning into Sky One. I bet the Coming Next bit will be ditched when it starts blocking out facial expressions, important text etc in programmes.
