    Hey all

Looking for some advice on a new camera purchase. Over here in States for while and doing alot of travelling so want to upgrade my camera to something a bit more advanced to make the most of it
Currently using an old Nikon Coolpix 4100 and have taken some gr8 photos with it but looking to upgrade to digital SLR.

Would love to know the best one to get and also what are main benefits of upgrading to SLR.

    Thanks in advance. :D

Edit: Yup just noticed amateur is spelt wrong!!

The two most favorite DSLR's are the Canon EOS 350D (or Canon Digital Rebel XT in the US) and the Nikon D50/70. Both have their pro and cons, I recently choose to go for the Canon and very happy with it. The benefits of SLR are many... you have more options on the cam to improve your pictures, also you can upgrade the camera with a wide range of different lenses. They're usually a lot quicker as well. Anyway... I wouldn't go for anything else but a Canon or Nikon. Good luck.

yeah, as before, the Nikon D50 or the Canon 350D are your best options.

i myself have the Nikon and I find it amazing, its also my first DSLR, its very user friendly for beginners. But if you've had any experience with a SLR it can be annoying.

But its still a great cam!

Thanks for all the info lads, probably looking at the D50, caught my eye last nite in shop near my place, its $630 including taxes which is 520 euro. Is that good price?? been checking on the net and seems to be good.

Oh definitely...for european standards anyway... consumer electronics are so much cheaper in the US. Maybe you can find it cheaper somewhere else in the US though. The Canon is a bit more expensive, but both cams have their pros and cons, do some research, read reviews and articles, check them out in the shops then make your decision. I took two weeks before I made my final decision on the cam. Oh and the EOS 350D is called Digital Rebel XT in the US.

yeah thats pretty good. Is that with the kit lens? The 18-55mm one?

Ya it seems alot cheaper over here, was surprised to see it for that price in the shop as its as cheap if not cheaper than places online, did a pricescan and its pretty much the best deal going.
Yep it comes with the 18-55mm one..
What type of zoom will the D50 give me, in lay mans terms.. Anyone got any examples?

Thats a really good price in that case.

Eh, the 18-55mm lens isnt the most amazing zoom, but it will do for the time being. And the resolution is enough for some decent zooming or cropping afterwards.

I believe that when you devide 55 by 18 you get the zoom factor, which is 3x in this case. It's not much, but good enough to start with.

Why not go a step back and save some money on a 300d? They can't be bought new anymore, but you can definitely pick one up a lot cheaper in the states second hand and then grab a nicer lens then the kit.

I have a 300d and they are brill for starting out.Have all you need, but not too much to confuse!
