My friend asked me to fix his laptop because anytime you load into xp the computer basically freezes up but you can do one or two things so i won't say it completely freezes. I have no problem booting into windows in safe mode. I ran windows antispyware beta1 and no spyware has been found but he has no up to date antivirus and even when you try to run his mcafee it says it doesn't exist. This all sounds like the nyxem.E virus but i have one problem; the removal tool symantec offers has to be run and installed on the desktop but how in gods name am i supposed to do that considering i can't get into the desktop and also safe mode won't let me install any programs?
All the hardware is fine i did a diagnostic check i'm just wondering if there is anyway of installing an anti virus or even if this is actually a different virus so i don't have to resort to reformatting it? If anyone can help it'd be much appreciated.
    thanks:D

You don't need to install anything.

The fix is a stand alone executable.

Just boot to safe mode with networking, download it and run it. Make sure System Restore is turned off too.
