    Just a quick question

What temperature should my cpu be at ??

I dont mean a fancy liquid cooled or liquid nitrogen covered PC at -20,

Just a normal PC, what temperature is average, and what temp will it go up to before it goes BOOOOOMMM !!!

I don't know, but mine runs at 50-55C, but I've had it up over 75C with no apparent side-effects.

    What cpu do you have?

Post your temperatures and computer spec and we can tell you if its ok.

Was just going to post the very same question, here are my stats for my laptop, is 75 degrees a bit on the hot side? Also my desktop makes an aweful racket, thought it was the case fan but then discovered it was the cpu fan, can I do anything about this? How? (See Stats for desktop below) Any advice/comments would be most helpful.

    Thanks:D

With regards to the desktop the temps you are reporting are ok, on the laptop that seems to be a very high temp, where are you getting the temp reading from? BIOS? or Software in windows?, although mobile processors generally have a higher tolerance for running hot, due to having less fans and cooling capabilities.

You can get software to turn down the fans on your PC, just keep an eye on temps when making changes if they go too high adjust the fans higher, generally anything above 60c is too hot for desktops

    it won't.
At higher temperatures, latch-up becomes more likely and the PC will crash. Power down, wait a minute and reboot and it will be fine.
Continuous running at over 85°C may significantly decrease the life of the chip. More likely you'll upgrade before it burns out anyway.

Its very very difficult to damage an IC with self-generated temperatures.
Turning up the voltage is another matter. If you run it at a higher voltage than its specced for you may burn it out much quicker.

Getting all the info from Everest 2.50, is there another way toget this info? BIOS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

motherboard monitor is good for getting info. It all comes from the BIOS anyway.

Khannie thanks for the Motherboard Monitor suggestion, Everest is a bit of overkill just for checking the temps.;)

My Athlon 64 3800+ rarely goes over 60 C with the stock cooler, playing CS or HL or FEAR or anything.

75 C is fairly hot for a laptop.

Id only be getting those kinda temps when i overclocked my laptop and playing games.

My CPU temp is around 45c-50c when just browsing the net.

    Pentium 4 2.2ghz
    Win 2k
    GeForce 4 4200 64MB

Id check if your fans are working correctly on the laptop.

The fans spin up ok and when they do the temp comes down to around 61c-65c, can get the cpu temp down to 50c using an oscilating (sp?) fan under the case.:D

I've overclocked mine and it never goes above 50 degrees. I'm not happy if a CPU is running at over 50 degrees because ti normally means other components such as the mosfets (supply voltage to the CPU) are running 5-10 degrees hotter.

I've always been told 50 degrees should be your ceiling in order to avoid damage/reduced cpu life.

Suppose it could just be a mis-reported temp, although case does pretty hot!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,912 ✭✭✭SeantheMan

    Ok, the Temperatures are

    Cpu Temp 33c/91f
Theres also a sensor floating around inside the case,
    Temperature of that 25c/75f

So lookin at people sayin up to 50c is ok, then im happy.

Thanks for the feedback ;) I fell reassured now
