    Right,
I have a terrible, terrible pc.

    256 SdRAM
    1ghz processor
    Radeon 7000

I need to upgrade. Want to play WoW.Have it and bought 2 months. Wasted.

What should i get first? What is the most important.

    Processor, gfx card, RAM?
    I am a n00b to all this.

Keep in mind i have a very very small budget.

I know this probably seems a stupid thread but i need help.

    Thanks, Help appreciated.

    Whats your present motherboard?

tbh they could all do with upgrading but if you want to get playing straight away, the only thing there that doesn't meet the msr for wow is the ram, wow needs a minimum of 512mb ram to run

I don't know what motherboard i have. My budget is about 60.
I could stretch. Am in the processof sellinbg Nba Live for xbox and my gamecube. This will all go towards it.

How would i find out my mobo. My dad got this pc when i was younger and didn't know anything about it.
Now i know a small bit.

All i know about mobo is that there is 4 slots for RAM.

@angelofdeath: On WoW box it says 256 RAM min.
On WoW site, Radeon 7000 isn't listed as supported.

My main question is what/where/which is the best gfx card and processor and will i need to buy anything else.

Second hand is only option with such a small procesorr, i know.

    Appreciate the replies though.

this might help you identify your motherboard, about the ram this was where i got the msr just noticed there the supported video card page, for secondhand hardware keep an eye out in this forum or post up a new thread in this forum, doubtfull you'll get much for 60 quid, for the ram and cpu you'll need to know a bit about the motherboard to find out the cpu socket and ram speed, as for the graphics card i'd suggest you try to get at least a 9600

Thanks, I have posted a few times for buying PC Parts. I just don't know enough about what i need enough to buy something.

I will check that site, and post what i find.

    Thanks

EDIT - IS there anyway to find out what mobo i have without opening my pc?

I have 256 MB pc 100 ram and a AGP Geforce 2 , you can have them if you send me an SAE but dont know if WOW supports the G2.

    Arent you in luck
32MB 3D Graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting (such as an Nvidia GeForce 2 class or better

Send me an SAE with lots of stamps on it (about €2 worth to be sure) and i post them to you.

The Radeon 7000 should work with WoW, unless it's a crippled pci version or something.

The rest of your spec is pretty bad, so there's no point going wild on a gfx card anyway with a 1ghz Celeron.....

If you get more ram, make it 512mb, and a slightly better gfx card you will pull off running it smoothly on all low settings....

edit: Very nice of you Kdjac :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

Tbh for bang for the buck get the 512 off Havok and the 9200 you be fine , just make sure you haggle.

if not you can have this shi...parts :D

Send me an SAE and their yours, really an SAE i have issues with posting things.

I actually had to withdraw the 9200. Being used actually unknownst. :D

    But I do have a Geforce 4....

Although to be honest, I'd be worried about the 1ghz celeron.....such terrible memories of trying to play unreal tournament back in the day on my friends Celeron...!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

I had a 9200 cracking card had Doom 3 running nicely on it, his board only supports the celeron so 512 more ram should help it with a card that run WOW.

Yeah, there is a point. With a poor processor, at least some extra ram and better gfx will help out. You are never going to be able to run it above low, but at least you should be able to run it smoothly....

The Geforce 4 is on my FS thread, looking for 15 euro, but I'd definately try Kdjacs G2 first.

Basically it'll be a brown slot with the card in it, next to a few white slots (pci).

You might not even have agp, as the Radeon 7000 was available in pci and agp, but you should...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

Brown thing above the white things.

Open your case from the left hand side (facing you) and look.

if you only see white, your ****ed.

The easiest way is to open it and look inside. Or Go to Display Settings Advanced and Click the Adapter tab.
Post the exact name of your Radeon 7000 it will have some funny numbers.

    Chip Type - Radeon 7000 AGP (0x5159)

    But..

When i went into properties. It said.
    Location - PCI bus 1

Which is it? PCI or AGP?

    2TM-3VSA2.jpg
    It has an AGP slot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

    How did you do that?
    lol :D

In that case, I have an AGP slot. i hope..

This is something that the more experienced heads might confirm, but isn't there a voltage issue with older AGP slots and the newer cards?

I don't think his pc is that old. He already has a Radeon 7000, which isn't ancient. As well as that he's not looking for a 6600 or anything remotely modern like that, just something better to go with the rest of his spec - like a Geforce 4 or similar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

Exactly. Obviously, I would love a great pc but i don't know enough about it to get them on my current set-up. I don't even know what mobo i have.
I think i might get a mobo, if i can cheaply, then a Processor, etc etc.

I Have a few lots for sale [see sig], if these come off. I might be able to get some decent parts, Until then, i am gonna settle for whatever i can to play WoW :D quite well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

KdjaC, PM me your address and i will send SAE unless you dont want to give me stuff anymore. I honstly don't mind. I will understand if you don't wanna anymore.

If you don't know anything about them, don't try and build one yourself. You'll end up frying something, breaking something or worse.

Why not look at Dells cheapest options? For about 350 quid in both Dell and Currys, you'll get either a 2.8 celeron or a semperon of some sort, 256ram and 64mb gfx. You can throw in your own decent card for about sixty....a 9600xt or even a 9800pro. So if you take the base unit, 350 (currys had one for 329), and add 100 for gfx and 256 more ram, for under 500 quid you have a basic PC that will play WoW great. Plus you can sell your own PC for about 100. If you can't build yourself and are on a tight budget this is a fairly decent option.

I cannot say strongly enough - don't even think about building one yourself, it will end in tears! Unless you get someone to help you of course. :D

Send him a jiffy bag, which is a padded envelope, with another padded envelope inside with your address on it as well as a few stamps so he can send the stuff back without having to pay postage
