my pc wont boot up . when i start it comes up on a black screen with:
windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
    c:\windows\system32\config\system.

i cant repair it using my xp disc as the cd-rom drives dont work on the pc the computer stopped recognising them a while ago . any suggestions for getting it going again.

the pc is a self build
    amd 64 3400+ socket 754
    msi k8n neo fsr

    thanks

You self build but dont create drive images for occasions just like you are experiencing???

Whats the name of the file as
    c:\windows\system32\config\system.
means nothing without the correct extension.

can u access the BIOS? or start in safe mode?

    if not:

Get a cheap new CD drive and boot XP and re install.

yea i can access the bios. cant get into safe mode. the cd drive problem is in the motherboard i think. i tried several different cd/ dvd drives and cables a couple of weeks before the crash.

That's not your problem. It's good old windoze again - it's nuked your registry. I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago, and it took about 20 hours over a weekend to get it back.

The MS doc is here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545

    Follow this ****EXACTLY ****

Boot from winxp cd, use recovery console , fixboot, fixmbr commands from dos,or try getting into dos from safemode, press f8 when booting up pc.
