IMO in charge of infrastructure i.e. WAN links, routers, switches, backups etc.

I.T. management (again, IMO) isn't exactly a technical job.

That's what I was going to say ... in charge of the day to day running of the IT operations within a company. Infrastructure, helpdesk, support etc. Stuff like any in-house development, strategic planning etc. would be handled by others.

It really depends on the size of the company if its a small software company it could be just in charge of the development team ,it its a data centre it could be as etho_ mentioned in charge of the whole infrastructure of the building and cabling of the building etc.

Operations = day to day function of the business. They aren't involved in the core business of the company but they do however give all its support. Infrastruture is generally a specific area of the compnay (Not to say that its not involved in Operations).

Really depends on what the IT company does, IT service's... boxed product la di da etc.

Its a medium to large sized software development company that produces software for the financial sector. I have an interview with the operations manager and i was wondering if it was going to be a technical one

I'd find it strange for the head of operations to give a technical interview. He may ask you about the technology sector in general. Chances are the guy is around 35+ (If its a large company) and has been focusing on driving operations as a business function to a certain level.

Generally when thats your main focus you don't have time to delve into the smaller details of other areas (Not to say he isn't informed about tech!)

It also depends on the role you are going for of course :)

I was told it was a "HR focused interview" but when I saw it was the head of operations and not a member of HR I taught it could be technical one. It’s for a graduate java developer position

If it's an IT company an Operations manager usuallay does what eth0_ has pointed out. I wouldn't have thought that hiring programers came under his/her brief tbh.
