Please forgive me if this has appeared before. I have done a search but couldn't find exactly what I want.

I just looked at my task manager and following a discussion with a friend these were noticed.

Under the processes tab the following appears

HPW8TBX has a CPU rating of 06 (This appears 3 times)
    WinXPdisablezero... has a CPU rating of 64 - 85
System idle process has a CPU of 00

CPU usage was 100%. I believe this should be around 5 - 6%

I assume that the HPW8TBX is something to do with the printer which is HP

Now when I checked these there was nothing running at the time. (Nothing running under applications tab)

Could anyone advise and I apologise if my terminology is not correct.

Also, I noticed this after installing McAfee internet suite yesterday maybe coincidence.

smashey are you using a wireless network?

If not or you are not using the WinXP wireless config then use Task Manager to kill off WinXPdisablezero (don't worry it will come back when you restart, to get rid of it I just renamed the .exe file and now am not troubled by it) and watch to see the the CPU usage, it should drop away to the 5-6 % you were expecting.:D

Just out of curiosity did you notice this problem before you installed the McAfee programme

I am using a wireless connection. To kill the WinXPdisablezero do I just right click it and delete it? Or does this not apply to wireless connections?

    Many thanks

Yes. While the printer was busy, I had trouble opening certain other applications. After installing McAfee it seemed to get worse.

I'm open to correction on this but the purpose of this program is to stop the OS from constantly updating the status of the wireless link. This is not needed if you are using the config software that came with your wireless card as it monitors the status.

To kill it off, ctrl-alt-del to bring up Task Manager, go to processes tab, select WinXPdisablezero and right click it, select 'End Process Tree' from context menu that pops up click yes (don't worry as I said b4 it will run again when you restart the computer, PM me if you want more details on how to stop it starting)

BTW What equipment are you using? OS etc? I'm using Belkin HiSpeed links thoughout, although the laptop card has very limited range, go outside the room and it can barely connect. House has solid internal walls, darn the builders of the 1880's!!!:o

Thanks. A few other things just don't seem right. Every time I print something, my CPU usage in the processes tab on the task manager shoots back up to 100%. Also I can neither access my printer's toolbox or uninstall the printer.

    Any ideas/advice.:(

Some printer drivers which are I-O bound and don't show up as problematic on taskman, can be pigs. On one of my machines which also has my printer (Epson C86), when it's printing I just wait because I know it'll crawl until the printing is finished. Sounds similar to what you're experiencing.

The printer seems to be printing fine now. However every time I print something, my CPU usage in the processes tab on the task manager still shoots back up to 100%. This remains the case until long after the printing is done until I 'end the process tree'. When I do this, the reduction in noise level with fans etc. is very noticable. Also if I try to access my printer's toolbox nothing happens but again the CPU usage goes back to 100%. Am I right in thinking that having the computer running at this level will eventually lead to some damage?

Just had a thought:rolleyes: , Google it..... and the answer is its your HP toolbox.

    File Name: hpw8tbx.exe

    Description:
Hpw8tbx.exe is installed by the drivers for HP DeskJet 1220C printer. It is a system tray icon program that allows you to monitor the status and change the settings of your printer. If you seldom use this program, you can disable it to save computer resources. Info from http://www.spyany.com/files/hpw8tbx_exe.html

So do you have an icon in the bottom right of your screen for the toolbox? Not sure why you has 3 of these listed in the task mgr... mystery deepens.

Im a novice with these things but I recall having a similar problem with Word documents. It would take about a minute for the doc. to open. The problem was with the antivirus programme which kept scanning the documents.
I changed PC's shortly after that so someone else probably inherited the problem.

My point is that it could be your McAfee programme that you installed. Try disabling it and then printing to see what happens. TBH its just a shot in the dark.

I will bow though to the superior knowledge of the other members

Problem sorted. Googled it and eventually found a forum which had the same question I had. Had to uninstall the printer and re-install it without the toolbox option. No problems now. Munstercycling and muffler, thanks for the advice.:)
