Cost of motoring

All this talk of tolls has got me thinking about the true cost of motoring on society. ie How much tax revenue raises against how much accidents, road building/maintenance, environmental effects etc cost.

Whitelegg's estimate of £1000 sterling is a bit dated, and applies to a different country, the UK green party has a recent paper: http://www.greenparty.org.uk/files/reports/2004/FAIR%20ON%20FUEL,%20fair%20on%20the%20future%20Jun%2004.htm

I was wondering if anyone can point me to any estimates for Ireland?

    Thanks

Don't know about the cost to society but on an individual level, I would reckon the majority of people grossly underestimate the cost of motoring to themselves

You're probably right that most people underestimate the cost to themselves, but do they realise that overall, they're probably subsidised by society?
It's likely that motorists do not pay the full cost of motoring.

Does anyone know of any studies on costs for this country?
