Below is the url for the bata 2 version of Internet Explorer 7 free download.

" Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview will only run on Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) systems, but will ultimately be available for Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and Windows Server 2003. "

Microsoft continues to amaze me at how they always seem to alienate the computer user an example of this is above. What about computer users with Windows XP Home or Professional edition.

you need to have a valid XP serial key for the install to continue. The installation checks your serial number. Just tought i might mention that.......

This is Windows XP home or pro, You just need SP2 to install (And tbh you really should have SP2)

Surely we are all running legit copies! ;)

I know you need SP2 on Windows XP to install bata. But according to the website Internet explorer 7 will ultimately be available for Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and Windows Server 2003.

No mention of Windows XP Home or Professional i all i was stating

I took that to mean that's available for Windows XP and will be eventually available for the others.

I hear this has tabs like Firefox?

The question is how much better is firefox than latest attempt by Microsoft to bamboozle people?

Anyone download it ? how does it work and is it worth downloading? I presume this isn't the "official" one we'll buy off the shelves in a few months only a tester right?

Hence the name "Beta 2", I presume...

I'm worried it looks like a contender and might stop more people from switching to Firefox, however the fact that it is only compatible with newer pcs will hold it back. It appears like it would be a system hog. Definitely would make the internet easier to surf for non-FF users.

Me too - but it's cack!

    Uninstall coming right up!

... and there-in lies the rub - no uninstall! Typical.

Worked for me too XP/SP2. Seems slow though. Like the tabs though. I have a pain synchronising my bookmarks between IE6 (work) and FF (home). I really only like FF for the tabs. So maybe this will make me switch back to IE for home use.

I'm running it now. Like it alot tbh (and I'm no MS fanboy..... believe me I hated IE6 with a passion...)

It's very different visually and functionally.. Some very nice features that Firefox doesn't have like quick tabs..... (sort of like the Slide Sort view in Powerpoint... think that's what it's called anyway.. haven't used Powerpoint in years..)

The layout has completely changed. Some elements remind me of Opera (the look/feel of the tabs).

Runs fairly fast for me. Not as light as FF but doesn't feel laggy either. (my computer isn't THAT fast... Athlon 2000+ and 640MB of RAM)

All sites have rendered in it properly so far...

Wow, tabbed browsing and a built-in search bar... I haven't already been using that for the past two years... Microsoft continue to lead the way in innovation

It's the Borg all over again tbh.

I must try this out when I get home.

The only function of FF that I really like is the tabs, and there are some drawbacks to FF that I find annoying, if IE7 can do the tabs, I for one am looking forward to it, but I will still keep FF.

just go into the add/remove programs and tick on "show updates". you'll see it then.

I don't like to look of that interface TBH.

I'm too used to my customizable FF. I don't think it'll win many FF fans over

Opera is the way to go. Fast, Powerful, Handy etc.

My advice - don't bother with this Beta!!

It trys to do some sort of smoothing on the text displayed in web pages - but just makes it all blurred.

The menu at the top of boards.ie is distorted.

Not as slick as FireFox and the shading of any non-selected tabs is too dark.

    Install required a reboot (yawn).

Time to un-install and revert back to FF...

Still has many of the exact same security holes as Internet Explorer 6. If it weren't for FireFox this wouldn't even be seeing a release. Can't see why anyone would want to reward Microsoft for copying the other guy, two years late and still managing to preserve much of the ineptitude of the original product, by downloading this Beta.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 269 ✭✭cyberwit

All valid arguments. But we have to remember this is a Bata version a so it is not going to be perfect much like the one we currently have do you think Internet Explorer 6 could be a Bata version ha ha ha :v:

    Sorry my attempt at humor.

i was gonna download but now i'm thinking what the point would be. i use firefox 1.5. i have tabbed browsing and integrated search... what does IE7 offer me that firefox doesn't? apart from spyware...

Even if it had similar functionality to my Firefox, with it's 24 extensions installed, I still wouldn't download and try it, because I'm lazy and have better things to be doing.....

    *scratches self*
