Photoshop freezing -- please help :(

This could do better in a tech forum -- please move it if you feel thats the case.

Problem is, Photoshop CS is freezing and crashing whenever I try and select a font for the typing tool.

It's a fresh install of CS, on a fresh install of Windows XP. No third-party add-ons installed, no extra fonts installed (just the default WinXP fonts). The whole thing just freezes as soon as a font is selected from the dropdown list. No error message is given and I haven't a clue what could be wrong.

    Anyone ever experience this?

-- this also happens in Illustrator. I can only assume it's a problem with the fonts, but as I said I've only got the default lot installed.. not too keen on removing them to test the theory.

I don't know whether ram would be an issue here but it could be. How much memory have you got installed? Photoshop eats ram like there's no tomorrow!

As opposed to crashing. It can be left for a long time and is just unresponsive, I have to force it closed myself.
    try to reinstall cs.
    Already tried. No good.

Fonts seem to work fine in wordpad. Although I've read that PS can be 'super sensitive' to corrupt fonts.

There's 512mb. Pretty sure it's not the ram. Nothing else in photoshop has problems, only switching fonts.

I'm going to try and get the full set of fonts from another system, see if that works.
