pc startup problem

    went to turn on my pc today - 3.2mhz p4
    and got a high pitched intermitent alarm with no screen at all.

    could some thing have happened to the cpu
    mb seems to be ok as it is going thru the startup boot --dvd drives and then to hard drives but thenjust the alarm ??

    what is the alarm asociated with ??

    how can I check the cpu --if it is the problem ??

    Sounds like a beep code to me , check the codes on this site and then compare to what your PC is doing , it should tell your what subsystem is failing , all beep codes indicate serious errors , however not all are a serious issue to fix , for instance re-seating graphics cards or memory chips may well fix your problem ,
    Anyway check which code your PC is giving and refer to this ,
