I recently installed Winxp and i cant get any games to work. Its a Geforce FX 5200 not great i know but it ran games in win2k. When i do a DXDIAG it says that Direct 3d is not active but i cant activate it. Games generally give me a Direct3d error when i try and run them.

    any ideas?

You probably just need to (re)install the latest nvidia drivers for the card and then (re)install the latest directx

I have reinstalled directx a few times but you know yourself it doesnt really reinstall per se if you are trying to install the latest version over the latest version. And ive reinstalled the latest Nvidia drivers too. same thing happening.

    whats your full system spec?

It's probably some drivers missing somewhere. Is it XP service pack 2? Have you downloaded everything from windows update?

windows update is on, its SP2, and its a reasonable specced machine that everything was working fine with when it was w2k

go into your system spec and see if ther are any yellow "bangs" on any of the hardware...it's possible that some audio component might be missing a driver..long shot but what the hell!

stupid question but it is the winxp driver your using now for the nvidia and not the win2k one yeah???

try uninstalling the video card from system and let windows re-dectect maybe??

Nope all the hardware is installed. Ive removed and reinstalled the VC a few times.
    DXDIAG says this

Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer

    Its the XP/2000 Driver

Best thing might be to totally uninstall DirectX and the Nvidia driver, use Add/Remove Programs first and then there's utilities available on Guru3D.com to make sure they're both fully removed. Then reinstall driver and DirectX and test again. If that doesn't work remove both again and try installing an older Nvidia driver, see if that makes a difference.

yeah as stevenmu said a fresh install is the next step i'd try tbh

or maybe check that your hardware acceleration on the card is up full whack
