We're just minutes away from the oscar nominations, the prelude to the film industrys most important night, and i have a question.

Has the so called "Best Picture" ever gone to the real best film? In my long time as a movie fan i can think of only "Schindlers List" and "American Beauty" as worthy recipients. Looking back at it, it seems to me that the academy only pick "Coffee table bulls**t, unwatchable movies of unreadable books" to quote mr tarantino.

Anyway, what do you think? Has there been worthy winners and what are the unsung heros that didn't reach the podium?

    Rebecca
    On The Waterfront
    Casablanca
    All The Kings Men
    The Apartment
    The Godfather 1 and 2
    The Sting
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
    Annie Hall
    Deer Hunter
    Platoon
    Unforgiven
    Schindlers List
    American Beauty
    Million Dollar Baby

are the worthy winners ive picked out since the 40s, the 80s looks to me like the lowpoint of the awards and 2000's have dragged up some seriously ridiculous winners like A Beautiful Mind and Chicago.

i suppose it comes down to the taste of whoever is on the academy

I think out the last 25 years or so

    American Beauty
    Titanic
    Schindlers List
    Silence of the Lambs
    Rain Man
    Platoon

are probably the only winners I could ever envision myself watching again.

One mans trash and all that...

even between the last two posts, there have been significant differences and, obviously, I'd differ to an extent to (i.e. Titanic. Yuck.).

So basically in the 75 years or so the competition has been going we have a dozen or so worthy winners.

To be honest the whole thing has been ruined by the politiking of Miramax and the like.

Hollywood is like a big episode of "Curb your Enthusiasm", you offend one person and your never forgiven, the rest of the time you have to kiss ass to get noticed.

The fact that Scorsese never got an oscar sums up the ceremoney. At this stage i dont want him to get it.

Anyway here's some of my favourites overlooked for best picture:

    Goodfellas
    Pulp Fiction
    Raging Bull
    JFK
    Sideways

It's very seldom the best Film is even nominated let alone wins. Generally the winner is a from a big Hollywwod studio. Although The English Patient was a very suprising and worthy winner. It was a completly independant film.

City of God was undoubtly thr greates film of 2003 and it bearly got a nod.

Big Studio + Holocast\Underdog\Tom Hanks + Obilitory crying scene = Best Film

    American Beauty
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
    Silence of the Lambs

I see (and remember now) that The English Patient actually won one year. That was so incredibly boring.

Sideways was awful and definitely not funny.
    Pulp Fiction is over hyped.
Goodfellas and JFK are excellent films(when you're in the mood)

I think this thread quite obviously displays that you're never going to please everyone - as soon as someone says a great film that was overlooked at the oscars someone else comes along and declares it a piece of ****. What the academy thinks is the best picture will please some people and annoy others. It's always going to be the way.

Thank you for reading - this thread can now be closed.
