Taxi prices

Ive taken a more than usual amount of taxis lately, and it just seems that there is little consistency in what your being charged every time...why is that?

For example, today I took a taxi from citey centre to the airport, cost came to just over €13. Then I took a taxi from the exact same place, back into the city centre and it was €23! How does that happen?

The 2nd taxi was only a couple of hours after the first...and the traffic was very similar (non congested, free flowing) for both journeys.

Anyone else have similar suspicions that taxi men just charge whatever they like and know they are going to get away with it?

It would be *slightly* more expensive as you pay a fee to leave the airport but Airport Taxis are renowed for being cheating bastards.

However what was the time you left? If you were on Rate 2 that price would be correct.

How did the two receipts compare from each journey? Should be easy to see exactly where the extra charges came from presuming the two taxis took the same route.

Some of them take you half way around the world to your destination. Others are bang on. It's a lot more to do with the taxi driver than any other factor.

Is this just round the airport/city centre you are talkin bout?

When you get into a taxi do you not say bring me to <your location> and I want you to go via <some route>? I'd never dream of getting into a taxi without telling the driver the way I want to go, presuming i'm familiar with the route.

there is a special fee for being picked up from the airport but taxi drivers like to scam people there too. i think its a little from column A, a little from column B.

on here a few weeks ago someone said him and 6 or so friends all got two taxis from an airport, not dublin, and exactly the same journey cost one taxi 10 euro more than the other. now thats a scam

I supose that would make the difference. I just don't bother with taxis. I get the bus or I walk. I think I heard that some of them take you half way around the world sometimes (esp. drunk girls) on the Adrian Kennedy Phone Show.

I just get the aircoach from the airport to the cloest taxi rank home. Also dont have to deal with "taxi-man airport talk" after a long tiring flight.

i've notced my taxi fare varying wildly too. i've gone every route too at this stage from the city centre.

now unless it is rush hour i just tell them to go up gardiner street and thru drumcondra otherwise every last one of them tries to go past tolka park and towards clarehall and along the malahine road (that little detour puts about 8-10 euro on you).

That's a great price. I've never been charged less than €25 from Pearse Street.

How do taxi men sleep at night

The City Centre could also be Parnell Sq, and from there to Pearse Street could be easily a tenner.

I'm in college in Sligo, 5 euro within a 2 mile radius of the town, no matter how many passengers... total bargain

hate having to get taxis. a while back 3 of us were getting one to some fellas house in the back arse of nowhere, we were never in this house before.

the taxi driver couldn't find it, nor could he understand directions he was given over the phone, so he brought us back into town and charged us 20 quid for driving us around in f*cking circles
