cheers for that - got through ok. looks like my system is fecked though. only getting one signal through the LNB - tells me that the input 2 lock indicator is not locked. no signal on input 2

Sounds like your hard drive is banjaxed. Very easy to replace it yourself with a bigger one!

That is nothing to do with Hard Drive. Either a faulty cable, fault LNB or faulty tuner. Swap the two F-Connectors on cables from dish at the Sky+ rear after removing power. If the same input is lacking signal/ quality/lock it is the Sky+ tuner. If the error has swapped, then one cable is faulty, or connection at LNB or LNB.

You hit the nail on the head there Watty.

Sky told me they'd send an engineer out in a week's time to look at it, so I did a bit of digging and found that one of the two cables going into the box hadn't been crimped properly. I brushed off it when checking the connections on the back and it just fell out

The installers (who shall remain nameless) had bolted the cable into the back of the box but hadn't made the cable correctly. This would be the same installers who took an hour and three people to install sky plus into a house that already had sky installed. I've gaffer taped the cable to the box and now all is fine again.

    Thanks everyone for you help.

Well, at least you found the problem.

But you should drop into a nearby electrical shop and get yourself an F-connector. You can get a screw-on type that just threads itself onto the coaxial. No need for crimping.
