USB CD-ROM Issues

    Hi Guys,

I have an external USB CD-ROM (Teac CD-224E) that I got for my Laptop (Dell LS400) but when I connect it. It gives me an error about a power surge on the USB port and that a Hi-Speed USB device is connected to a non Hi-Speed USB port (Im guessing its USB 2.0 drive and its connecting to a USB 1.1 port). But it just shuts down after a while and doesnt work. Anyone got any idea whats going on?

Google doesnt turn up much either so Im lost. Perhaps a BIOS / Firmware update is needed or will that drive just not work with my Laptop?

I have an older Dell CD-ROM drive, its one that slots into a bay and it uses an unusual connection at the back of the Laptop and that can be used no problem.

Most USB CD drives will work at slower speeds on USB1.1 ports, however, yours may not. If the drive is designed for USB2 only then it's simply not going to work on that laptop.

BIOS/Firmware probably won't help, you could invest in a PCMCIA USB2 card though.

Cheers for the feedback man, I was just wondering how can I tell that the USB drive will not work at a slower USB speed?

PCMCIA card isnt really an option as I only have one slot and thats typically taken up by my wireless card.

I could but the Laptop isnt the best its a Dell LS400 and I have it just for the sake of having a laptop to be honest. I think I will be getting a tablet PC in the future though.
