Just hoping someone might be able to point me in the direction of a garage.. with mechanic.. my polo isn't starting properly with the last couple of days and I haven't a clue what's up. Money is pretty tight, I'm a student.. so if anyone knows of somewhere that can take a look without charging an arm and a leg I'd really appreciate it!!

Kealy's in Donnybrook are decent. There's a Qwik Fit type operation beside them too.
    That's not too far away.

IS the car just plain dead or does it attempt to start / turn over? Any noises?
It might just be the battery or the cold weather.

It starts but dies then straight away, so if I press boot.. it keeps going and is fine, doesn't cut out again or anything. But it is worrying me as I don't want to get stuck somewhere!! Oh and it doesn't happen everytime.. like today it was perfect when I started it to go to college.. it was after the lecture.. 2hrs later that I had trouble starting it! So it can't have been the cold when it had been sitting in the car park for 2 days.. and started no trouble!

WizZard - thanks! is that on the left on the way into Donnybrook heading towards town?

I had a Polo and, like many VWs then, cold starts were perfect however it didn't start quite so easily/readily when the engine was warm (eg parked for a while). When the battery was on it's way out there'd be plenty of diffs starting and the odd engine cut-out when driving slowly. Perhaps someone
else here might have an idea...

    El tel.. thanks for reply..
hmm so you think that maybe it is just the cold? What do you mean by
When the battery was on it's way out there'd be plenty of diffs starting and the odd engine cut-out when driving slowly.
? Sorry but I'm kind of clueless when things go wrong!

Sorry - towards the end of the battery life the car would have trouble starting and would cut out very readily in slow traffic, especially when the lights, heater, radio were all on. The cold weather also made starting with a dud battery difficult.

Apart from the one WizZard mentioned, there are a few other garages in the area (Donnybrook/Ballsbridge)-
The Waterloo Garage in Waterloo Lane, near the Burlington Hotel,
    Pembroke Service Garage, Baggot Lane,
Waltons, Leeson Park (off Dartmouth Square).

It was one of several garages mentioned in a thread that's eight years old and if your post above is anything to go by, I'm not surprised how the confusion arose.

Those guys have been in business for well over 30 years, they have a loyal customer base. I used to work in the area and never heard anyone say a bad word about them. One of my former colleagues who lives in Rathgar and is a car nut regularly uses them.

A trip to UCD on the way might have done no harm.
