A friend of mine knocked against his pc by accident and now it won't start up at all. It just beeps at him.

Any ideas as to what may be wrong?

Where is the best place to get it fixed?

    Thanks in advance.

Could be anything really. I could hazard a guess, but it would only be a guess. Marx computers do trouble shooting and repairs @ fairly good prices. They are based in fairview. Check them out. www.marxcomputers.ie

When he boots up does he not get a POST message from the bios with the error?

Some motherboards have LED's at the back of the machine which can explain what's gone wrong. You compare the pattern with the contents in the manual.

Or maybe a RAM module has slipped out?

Open the case. Take out the memory modules and reseat them securely.

I'd be confident that'll sort it. Well kinda confident anyway ;)

Look at the back of the case and you'll see 4 lights. They should all be green but you'll prob find since you can't boot up that they're not. In which case look up the chart here and you'll see why it's not booting.

I imagine something has become loose, like RAM or video card. So you'll prob just need to reinsert it.

as said above the dell 8400 has diagnostic lights on the back just above where you plug in the mouse and keyboard - marked with led's A,B,C, and D
