at our normal home game last night i was dealing,
player a bet on river player b called and showed straight player a said I thought so and pushed his chips up the table , he showed one card a king(for a pair of kings) and kept the other face down. and shoved them to me as dealer. I picked up the cards - board cards and their cards. he then said "hang on was there 4hearts on the board because I had one the 3- I never coped it until now."
I knew what cards they were the top two . i looked and yes he had the 3 of hearts.
I ruled that since the cards had been dumpted, and had hit the rest of the cards - they were dead and player b with the straight won the hand, there was a big discussion on it. eventually they took my ruleing.
    I was right wasn't I.

i think you where right, once the cards are mucked they are dead,

If he just turned them over and said the straigh won and didnt muck then you could say the cards speak for themselves and the hearts won,

But since they are mucked straigh wins

Yes you were. Cards are mucked and therefore his hand is dead. As a tip don't take the cards out the next time as that only fans the controversy.

Funny story on a similar topic last night.

3 guys in a hand at the last two tables stage of the Fitz rebuy. Flop comes 8s9s6h. Bet and all call. Turn comes a Ts. Checked all round. River comes a Qs. And its checked to the button who pushes for 15k all-in into a 8k pot. BB lifts his hand and has a moody look at it and I see he has As8c. And I think sneaky f**ker he's really milking this to try and catch the one remaining player too. Then he folds!!!!!!!!

The other player folds and I smell a rat but the guys have been playing at the table with me for 3 hours and really didn't seem to know each other and had gone after each other before.

So I ask the guy quietly after the hand was over. You did have the As didn't you? And he confirms that he did. Then he says out loud "There wasn't a four flush out there was there??". I confirm there was as does the rest of the table. The button player looked so relieved and later confirmed that he had a 4 high flush lol. The guy had been looking at his pair of eights wistfully before folding and hadn't even noticed the flush on board.

The poor guy goes on such tilt after that he can't barely play a hand for the next few rounds. And keeps shaking his head about it. Of course people did keep reminding him for some reason  Poker players eh? :p

i was in a hand in a pub tourney last week, I had J10 flop comes JJ3 i bet all folded but 1 guy, turn comes a 10 giving me a full house. 1 Guy bets i raise and he calls. river a Q. I bet him all in, he calls and i call a full house. he says all i have is trip Q's ,,, he was holding 2 Q's and with the 2 J's on the board has a better full house then me and he didnt even see it, But he didnt muck his cards he just turned them over and won the hand as we all noticed he had a full house.

    Two points:

    1. You are right. The second the cards touch other cards, they are dead. If he had thrown them down in front of him (and/or accross the line) he can grab them back and declare the hand. Cards speak but only non-dead cards.

    2. He's an idiot. If he throws the cards over he wins. Even if he declares king high you as the dealer are FORCED to point out the higher hand. In fact he MUST win the pot to avoid chip dumping allegations. I will almost always flash my cards, I've won several pots where I presumed the guy was calling my 2 pair or whatever with the straight/flush to find he's got TPTK etc.
If someone declares that I've won I'll ask the dealer to muck his hand before showing mine (some people simply declare that if I've called I've won and muck their hand without showing.... !!).

    DeV.

    tHanks all,
just making sure i wasn't gone mad. I hate when players show one card and if I am in the pot I will ask to see the other.
