Has anyone ever ordered from Technikdirekt.de.

Ordered a camera last night and now today I get a mail asking for ID check. They want me to fax them an ID card to verify an address.

This sounds a bit strange, Also I dont have any id card with an addess on it.

Has this request been made of everyone who uses this site?

Oh dear. That does not sound good. I just opened the window to order from them this minute,... now im not so sure.

Did you use a delivery address that is different to that on your credit card?

Btw, did you order the 17-85mm lens? Thats what im going for with the 350D. Decided to go for the items separately, without the battery grip.

I ordered the standard lens, gave the 17-85mm a miss.
I thought the deal with the grip was the best value on that site, how much is it seperatly?
For cards outside Germany they dont let you use a different shipping address to the billing address.

Surely its up to the bank to verify the address?

Yeah it is a very good package alright. Esp with the kit lens, the price is very good.

The price of the Set without battery grip:
    EOS 350 D Body 747,00
    EF-S 17-85/4.0-5.6 IS USM 479,00
    Setprice: 1.220,00 EUR

Which I know makes it seem like the grip would be a good idea at that price, but the grip set does not include any memory card, and i reckoned that I would not get much use out of the grip (with the rechargable lithium), so I decided to go for a memory card instead.

[Sorry, they are AC-Foto prices... I think I will order from there.]

I think this is pretty standard procedure for security purposes. All they are doing is verifying that you, as the card owner, are the same person that placed the order. It stops someone using a stolen card to order stuff. The shipping/billing address thing is for the same reason.
I've done this before, although not with this company, and never had a problem

I got a hi-fi from there, I scanned the card and details, no problems...
Germans just don't like credit cards :/

Ditto, I've done the same a few times for other sites, it's standard enough, just cover 8 of the digits with paper or something.

SO what sort of ID should I use? I dont think i have one with an address on it?

    Passport, drivers licence?

Passport is a common one. Just block off any serious details that they don't need. Date of birth possibly, passport number definately and so on.

They're ligit and that is their process alright but you have to be careful anyway - if it was intercepted on route. Fax and e-mail aren't secure, in general. They will accept scanned/e-mailed by the way.

As far as I remember Technikdirekt are a bit pickier than most. They only let me cover 4 of my credit card digits if I'm remembering correctly. Generally I block all bar the last 4. (Make sure to do the same on the back)

Yes, but a passport does not have an address on it. I don't see the point of doing this. Anyone can alter a scanned image in photoshop anyway if you wanted to commit fraud.

Passport has always been fine for me. They don't care about your address. Signature matching on the passport and credit card were the major things I always thought.

This is insurance for them. Their bank wont cover them if they haven't taken adequate precautions in the case that there is fraud involved.

Also they insist that the delivery address is the same as the CC billing address, which was a bit of a pain. They are a bit picky, and I had a frustrating couple of day trying to get them something which they would accept, and which was acceptable to my paranoia of sending personal details by email.

It's a once off though, and you won't have to do it for subsequent orders. They are quite reliable, and providing the goods are in stock (email them to check or you could be left waiting) will be with you in about 5 days.

    John
